Unexpected visitor: Woman finds bear in her apartment
Lexile

A North Carolina woman says she entered her daughter's apartment and found a bear, who had entered by opening an unlocked door, roaming through the home.

Asheville Fire Department spokeswoman Kelley Klope told news outlets the mother called emergency personnel after spotting the bear. It was eating some pet food.

North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission biologist Mike Carraway says the bear smelled dog food right inside the door. It was able to get in through the door by pulling down on the unlocked handle.

Klope says crews arrived and hit on the ceiling to scare the bear. The animal then left unharmed.

Klope says all that was left in the wake of the bear's visit was a broken flowerpot and blind.

Carraway says similar break-ins are rare, with this being the first one this year in the Asheville area.

This is crazy! That would be very scary if you come home and see a bear in your house or apartment. I would immediately call the police or a animal place like the girl in this story did. I would be very scared! This is a great article/story.

How did the bear unlock the door? But it was smart of that woman to contact authorities and wait for them to get the bear out unharmed

I think this would be so scary if this happened to me. i also think that this bear is very intelligent unlocking the door. I believe that animals are figuring out how to navigate the human world. But it will be most likely because some animals are decreasing in population so that makes a wave in the food chain. So whatever bears eat may be decreasing in population, so they go into towns or villages and look for food there. We eat food like hamburgers and fries, so animals could be smelling that and saying to themselves, " wow! that smells amazing!" So they go and do whatever they can to get to the food. Some could seriously hurt people, maybe even kill the humans. Since bears are so much bigger and stronger that they can hurt the humanms really bad. Those are my thoughts on the bears.

I love that they didn't harm the innocent animal. I love that they care so much as to just scare it away instead or killing it like most animal controls would. It was very funny that a bear unlocked the door and was eating dog food. In the picture I saw, it looked like the bear was just a kid and was separated from her mom and roaming the streets alone. I loved this article, so much love and thought.

The dog food lured the bear into the apartment. I found this article interesting because bears like meat but this particular bear was eating dog food.

I think that it is a little bit interesting to hear about a bear going into someone else's apartment. The bear was smart enough to open the door handle and go inside the apartment which I think is cool. The bear had smelled the dog food from the door and went inside. I don't know why a bear would eat a pet's food because it is unusual and strange. I think that it was good that the people didn't harm the bear but just scared it so that it would do no further damage than what it had already caused.

Since the bear was discovered eating pet food in the woman's apartment, it is likely that the animal, being hungry, tracked the scent of the food in the home. By opening the unlocked door to the apartment, the article states, the bear gained access to the food. It is unlikely that it would have entered had it not smelled the pet food. The article intrigued me with its alarming title and story. It told that the bear, despite entering the home, was peaceful and did not resist the fire crews. However, the article lacked length and descriptive details.

The pet food lured the bear into the apartment. I found this article interesting how they hit the ceiling to make the bear leave the apartment. This surprised me because I didn't know that a bear could unlock a door.

The bear was lured into the apartment by the smell of dog food.

I was surprised that all the bear broke was a flower pot and a blind.
