Is quicksand real? (Thinkstock)
Is quicksand real?
Lexile

You asked us, "Is quicksand real?"

Yes, quicksand is very real.

Is it like this?

Well . . . maybe.

Quicksand is usually a mixture of two things - sand and water, which is why quicksand is often found near riverbanks or beaches.

Sand is normally packed together pretty tight, and that's the reason it can support your weight, but if the sand gets flooded with water, all the grains loosen up and boom, you start sinking.

But not like in the movies, because you won't actually disappear under the quicksand.

Your body will displace an equivalent amount of water and then stop sinking.

Depending on your size and weight, you sink to your knees or your waist, something like that.

But now you've pushed out all that water, and the sand is packed around you, so you're stuck, really stuck.

But don't panic, seriously, don't panic. Panicky people flail around a lot, which will make you sink even deeper.

Instead, keep calm and try to lie back, because this distributes your weight more evenly, so you'll sink less.

Then, if you can, wiggle your legs and see if you can create a space for the water to seep back in, and loosen the sand.

This could take a very long time, so the best idea is to get help.

Scream out loud or post an embarrassing selfie, and after you've been rescued, be sure to tell your friends, yes, quicksand is real.

I think this article is very helpful because it reminds you to never panic or flail around when stuck in quicksand. Possibly, if your phone is not wet, you can call 911 or a friend to rescue you. Also, lean back so your weight gets distributed evenly.
Where would you be likely to find quicksand?
Answer: You would be likely to find quicksand near river banks and beaches.

I didn't think quicksand was real. I thought it was just in the movies

Quicksand sounds like it should be more slow in movies too.

I found this story informational because I didn't know what to do in quicksand and now I do. I learned that you don't sink all the way down in the sand.

Quicksand sounds like it should be more slow in movies too. They make it seem like they're sentient beings that eat humans, or they could be sand snakes

I literally thought quick sand was something you would only see in movies like Indiana Jones, now I know better!
