Dogs may now venture onto restaurant patios. That's because a new state law in New York allows restaurants to open outdoor dining areas to them.

The measure was signed into law by Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo. States including California, Florida and Maryland have similar laws.

Dog lovers and many restaurant owners in New York support the idea. They note that pooches must be leashed and restaurants could choose to keep them out of outdoor eating areas. While health officials expressed worries, Cuomo said the law's "firm health and sanitary guidelines" strike the right balance.

"This action will give restaurants an additional option to boost revenue...by appealing to this new audience of dog-owning New Yorkers and their four-legged friends," Cuomo said.

Dog owners are delighted.

"I think this speaks volumes to where we are as a society. Most people with dogs view them as members of the family," said Kim Wolf. Kim is a New York City dog owner. Kim works for an organization that helps people in poor neighborhoods care for their animals.

Restaurateur Michael O'Neal said he hopes the legislation will settle any uncertainty about bringing dogs to his Boat Basin Cafe, in Manhattan's Riverside Park. Dog owners often stroll through and sometimes stop in with their pets.

"In a park or in a sidewalk cafe, people should be allowed to have their dogs," O'Neal said Tuesday.

But health officials disagree.

The state Association of County Health Officials opposed the legislation this spring, saying it was "deeply concerned" about biting, sanitation and bringing "additional public health risks into food service establishments where none need exist."

But the association's members will follow the law, Executive Director Linda Wagner said.

As a Manhattan dog owner, Evelien Kong is enthusiastic about doggie dining, but she understands those who aren't.

"Maybe there's a happy medium," such as having dog-friendly and dog-free sections of restaurant patios, Kong said Monday night while walking her 8-year-old Shih Tzu, Gracie. "There has to be a healthy, mutual respect for both sides."

The bill's sponsor, Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, D-Manhattan, said "99.9 percent" of people she's spoken with support the measure.

"Once in a while you hear, 'I'm never going to go to restaurants that allow dogs,'" she said. "That's the beauty of the bill: The restaurant owner gets to choose."

Legislation intended to help New York's cats didn't fare so well. Cuomo vetoed a proposal to fund groups that trap and neuter feral cats and then release them back into the wild. In the veto, he noted that releasing wild cats is technically illegal and that feral felines threaten local wildlife such as birds.

A recent Siena College poll shows dog owners may have more political clout anyway. The survey found that 57 percent of New Yorkers consider themselves "dog people," while 17 percent call themselves "cat people."

Overall, 30 percent reported having a dog, 20 percent live with a cat and nearly 10 percent own at least one of each.

Cuomo has neither, but his girlfriend, chef Sandra Lee, has two cockatoos.

This new law helps restaurants because" The restaurant owner gets to choose" if they want to allow dogs. This will boost places that get more from dog people. It will also help businesses who don't allow dogs as a place for people who don't like dogs to go and eat.

The new law helps restaurants by allowing dog owners to bring their dogs in to eat with them, which provides more service and revenue. The article states that those with dogs are delighted about the new law and would be more likely to eat at restaurants that allow them to bring their dogs in with them. Many people currently do not go to restaurants to eat because they have to stay home and care for their pets, as well as feed them. This law could change that, giving people more freedom to dine and provide restaurant owners with more customers. I was interested by this article because of the interesting facts presented and arguments on both sides of the issue. I would absolutely support laws allowing pets to join their owners at restaurants, as long as it would be safe and enjoyable for the community.

This new law helps restaurants because the majority of New Yorkers support this las, and therefore the restaurants would get more customers. In the article's middle, it states, "The bill's sponsor, Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, D-Manhattan, said '99.9 percent' of people she's spoken with support the measure" (paragraph 14). Since practically everyone in New York is in favor of the new law, then if restaurants also support this law, they will get more business. This is so becuase dog owners will bring their pets with them to a certain restaurant that follows the law, thereby increasing the restaurant's amount of customers. The new law will help restaurants because it will raise the business's amount of consumers.

I found this article interesting because I thought that New York had previously passed a law a few years ago that stated that dogs could dine with their owners in restaurants.

This new law helps restaurants by attracting more customers with pets. With the new law, people are more willing to go to a restaurant and have the option of not leaving their pet at home. "This action will give restaurants an additional option to boost revenue...by appealing to this new audience of dog-owning New Yorkers and their four-legged friends," Cuomo said."

I found this article very interesting, because it states how rules are slowly changing based on what people are interested in. It shows how are society is gradually adapting to our modern times.

This new law helps restaurants by allowing dog owners to bring their dogs inside, and not worry that someone would steal thier dog of the dog didn't get loose from it's leash."This action will give restaurants an additional option to boost revenue...by appealing to this new audience of dog-owning New Yorkers and their four-legged friends," I chose this quote because it supports my answer and it probably would give restaurants better business because it would open up the consumers aloud. I chose this quot because I love dogs and I was happy to hear that dogs are now aloud to go into restaurants in California.

This new law helps restaurants because they will get much more business, now that anyone with dogs can now come to dine at the restaurant. Many people with dogs need a place to dine that also allows their pets to come with them. Before this law, many people had to find a restaurants that had outside seating because the owners of the restaurant did not allow the dogs to come inside. As stated in the article,"Dog owners are delighted," so now the restaurants will get much more business because now anyone with a dog is allowed to dine at any restaurant. I found this article interesting because I have a dog, and eating out when we have him out with us is a challenge. I found this surprising because I did not think this issue was going to be resolved very quickly.

This new law helps restaurants because it lets dog owners pick that restaurant over one that doesn't allow dogs and will bring more dog loving customers to eat at the one where dogs are allowed. These restaurants who let dogs come have owners saying "they were delighted"(on paragraph 5). I think more restaurants should have this so the can make more profit. One down side to this is dogs shed not all but most do so then you have to hire someone to clean it up or do it on your own, but some restaurants don't want to go through that work.

This new law helps restaurants because it will help bring in more customers than before. When people couldn't bring their dogs to eat with them they would only be able to eat at a small number of places. Now that this law has been established, people with dogs will be able to eat at many more dog-friendly restaurants than before. In the article one dog owner says "I think this speaks volumes to where we are as a society. Most people with dogs view them as members of the family." This statement is very true and shows that people would like to bring their dogs to eat with them because they consider them as a part of their family. It wouldn't be right leaving them at home. I think that it is great that this law has passed because I consider my dogs a part of my family and I understand where the dog owners in New York are coming from.
