Ever wonder what's really underneath that 5,000-year-old mummy's elaborate wrapping?

There will be a rare chance to find out. "Mummies: New Secrets From the Tombs" opens Sept. 18 at Los Angeles' Natural History Museum.

Using state-of-the-art CT scans, exhibition curators have looked right through the wrappings of some two-dozen mummies from Egypt and Peru. The researchers want to learn how the ancient people lived and died.

Thanks to large, tabletop computers placed alongside the mummies and their artifacts, museum visitors will be able to do the same.

The show is aimed at providing a greater understanding of ancient peoples and their cultures. It is curated by Chicago's Field Museum. The Chicago museum has one of the country's largest mummy collections.

After leaving Los Angeles in January the mummies will travel to several other cities.

You would need a scanner to be able to see inside the mummies and what they actually look like.

You would need to use a scanner so you can see the mummies without ruining the mummies. They are already very old and i'm sure many people would want to see them so it would be better to use the scanner instead of undoing the cloth and ruining it. :)

You would need a scanner in order to see the mummies, because they are wrapped in many layers of white cloth and you wouldn't be able to see through it without one. I have always wondered what a mummy would look like if you unwrapped it, but I think it would be very disturbing to see it after it's unwrapped.

i have wonder what mummies have looked like 5,000 years ago which that is probably why he made the scanner so you don't have to disrespecting their bodies by taking the cloth off.

I think you would need a scanner because you would want to see whats under the toilet paper because parts of the body might fall off because the toilet paper probably like stuck to the mummy now

I believe you need to use a scanner to see the mummies because the mummies cloth is vary delicate and could be hard to take off.

The reason you need a scanner to see the mummies is because when the Egyptians wrapped the special person in strips that cover the body they made it sealed tight so that it can stay safe.

You need a scanner so you can see through the cloth and so you don't have to unwrap them. Also,it would be disrespectful to take off the cloth.

I am surprised that technology has progressed this much and we are able to just see right through things like the mummies wrapping.I didn't know that technology has gone this far already. This article was very interesting to read and I would like to learn more about it.

You need a scanner so you can see the mummies and also so you don't have to unwrap them. Also you can find out how people lived back then.

I am surprised that our world has this technology basically to be be able to see through stuff. I can't imagine what the world's technology will be like in the future.

You would need a scanner to see the mummies because they are wrapped up in a dirty cloth and the bones are very fragile and you might brake them
