Ever wonder what's really underneath that 5,000-year-old mummy's elaborate wrapping?

There will be a rare chance to find out. "Mummies: New Secrets From the Tombs" opens Sept. 18 at Los Angeles' Natural History Museum.

Using state-of-the-art CT scans, exhibition curators have looked right through the wrappings of some two-dozen mummies from Egypt and Peru. The researchers want to learn how the ancient people lived and died.

Thanks to large, tabletop computers placed alongside the mummies and their artifacts, museum visitors will be able to do the same.

The show is aimed at providing a greater understanding of ancient peoples and their cultures. It is curated by Chicago's Field Museum. The Chicago museum has one of the country's largest mummy collections.

After leaving Los Angeles in January the mummies will travel to several other cities.

You would need a scanner to see the mummies because they are wrapped up in a white cloth, like toilet paper so you cant see through the cloth. Also it would be disrespectful to unwrap the mummies cloth.

I think it would be use full because you can look at the mummy and it would be easy with the scanner.

You need a scanner to see the mummies because mummies are wrapped over and over again in cloth like material to preserve the bodies. Also the scientists do not want to disturb the mummies cloth wraps and unwrap them because it would be disrespectful. In the text it says, "...right through the wrappings of some two-dozen mummies..." This quote doesn't explain why you need scanners, but I from this information I was able to understand that mummies are wrapped and that they didn't unwrap them. I enjoyed this article because I found it very interesting.

You need a scanner because the mummies are going to be really fragile, so the best way to examine mummies would be to use a computer. Also the mummies would have a risk of being touched and broken by other people and kids.

You would need a scanner to see the mummies because the scanner can see more than the human eye. Also because you can not unwrap a mummy because it will all fall apart. The scanner will be able to see through the cloth to get a better example of the mummy.

You would probably need a scanner to see what was inside the mummy or with it to know how it lived and what they had done to preserve the body and see how long the body has been wrapped up and for how many years because scientists want to know how long they have been preserved.

You would need a scanner to see the mummies Because the mummies have been wrapped up in white cloth for many years and people do not want to unwrap them also it would be disrespectful to unwrap a mummy. The scanner can see better than the human eye and its not disrespecting the mummy.
