An eastern black rhinoceros was born in a Czech zoo. Experts say it is a small but important step in efforts to save the animals from extinction.

Only a few hundred remain in African reserves, where they must be protected from poachers. Some 140 are in European zoos.

The rhino was born on Oct. 2 in the Dvur Kralove Zoo, which boasts the greatest number of the animals in Europe.

Curator Jan Zdarek says the calf has been in good shape and will stay with her mother, Etosha. She will stay with her for at least a couple of years.

After that, she might join four others from the zoo that were taken to their native habitat in Africa.

Zdarek says it is still not clear whether efforts to save the black rhinos will be successful.

It's really upsetting that species are becoming endangered due to human activity. I think it's sick how people can just rip the tusks or horns off an animal, and not feel any guilt. I'm glad that the birth was successful, and hopefully they succeed in helping the species expand.

The rhino species seems like a really wonderful species. I love that they are in different colors and all seem so different. I strongly disagree with poachers. Whatever they have that the poachers want isn't so important that they should end lives.

It is important for more rhino to be born this year. Only a few hundred rhinos are in todays world and they are close to becoming extinct. That is why it is important that the rhinos stay in the Czech Republic.

Some animals these days are very close to extinction and we should try more to prevent that, because when a species is gone it doesn't come back. Rhinos are endangered species, with only a couple hundred living in African reserves.
