It took an act of Congress, but the children of Washington were finally welcome to sled on Capitol Hill.

With a major blizzard hitting Washington, the U.S. Capitol Police said Jan. 21 that they wouldn't enforce a sledding ban. The law forbids sledding. The ban is to protect the Capitol grounds. But in legislation that cleared Congress in December, lawmakers instructed the cops to chill out.

In prior years, Capitol police officers reluctantly enforced the ban. Last year, however, revelers orchestrated a "sled-in."  It had the full support of Washington's nonvoting delegate, Democrat Eleanor Holmes Norton. A complement of media covered the story. The police stood aside, avoiding the embarrassment and media coverage that would have come from breaking up the fun.

Enter the powerful House Appropriations Committee, whose chairman has an office overlooking a prime sledding spot. The panel added language to a government funding bill that instructed the Capitol Police to "forbear enforcement" of the ban "when encountering snow sledders on the grounds."

The police were still there, but this time they watched to make sure the kids were having a safe time of it.

What makes capital hill so good for sledding is that because of the recent blizzard the hill is covered in snow. Also, because the sledding would take place at capital hill, the police guards protecting the capital can make sure no one gets hurt. This article was interesting because congress changed the law that forbids sledding on capital hill, and allowed people to sled anyways. This article was surprising because it is weird to think that Congress has not done this before.

The Capitol Hill is good for sledding because there is an abundant amount of snow, you can get a lot of speed because of its perfect grade, and there are police always making sure the area is safe. I think this is a cool, fun way to enjoy your time in the snow for people of all ages.

What makes Capitol Hill a good hill for sledding is the long stretched hill leading to the capitol but also the recent snow storm that hit Washington has brought some fun playful snow to Washington's hills providing a good place to sled. I find this article funny in a way, the police over the past years have enforced the banning of sledding down Capitol Hill but now that Congress has taken the ban off sledding down this hill the police are forced to stand down. I support congress's decision because I feel it is a fun, safe way to bond with the public of Washington.

One reason that the Children of Washington D.C. took a liking to the sled hill on Capital Hill was because it has a great slope. Most children would rather sled down a hill that be pushed on a flatter surface. Capital hill offeres a great sledding hill that all of the children in Washington D.C. can enjoy. Who does not like a long hill to sled down?

Another reason that the Washington D.C. citizens took their children to sled down Capital Hill was because it was a new a d exciting oppertunity. "In prior years, Capitol police officers reluctantly enforced the ban. Last year, however, revelers orchestrated a "sled-in."" this "ban" stated that the children in Washington D.C. were not allowed to sled down Capital Hill because the police wanted to "protect the Capitol grounds." This time however the police only had the power to "watched to make sure the kids were having a safe time of it." Maybe Capital Hill will be open to sledders next year too?

Capitol hill is good for sledding, well, because of the name. Capitol "hill". From just common sense I would think that a hill is general is a great place to go sledding. Also, "With a major blizzard hitting Washington" that means snow, and a lot of it. So with a big hill and a lot of snow, capitol hill would be a good place for sledding. This is really cool, but i wish it snowed here.

One thing that makes Capitol hill so good for sledding is how steep it is, a steep hill is good because it allows for a much faster speed. Another thing that makes Capitol Hill good for sledding is the abundance of snow there, allowing for a softer landing.

I found this article intriguing because they actually thought about enforcing a sledding ban, thankfully congress overlooked the ban and allowed sledders.

Children in washington are allowed to sled on capital hill. Since thete is a blizzard coming, police said that on january 21 that they would not enforce a sledding ban. I think it is cool that police are letting people sledd on capital hill.

Capitol Hill is a good spot for sledding, because it is full of snow from the blizzards and is a steep enough hill to ride on.

I found this article very interesting, because it shows how government rules could change with the opinion of others.

Since a major blizzard hit Washington, as stated in the second paragraph, there is a lot of snow on Capitol Hill. Also, the police are watching to make sure that the children are safe so that makes Capitol Hill good for sledding.

I thought this was very interesting before because I've never been sledding before. Ive seen the snow and Ive played in it multiple times but I've never been sledding and Capitol Hill seems like a fun, new activity for the children in Washington.

Capital Hill is a good sledding spot because it is next to the capital building. It says in the article, "Enter the powerful House Appropriations Committee, whose chairman has an office overlooking a prime sledding spot. The panel added language to a government funding bill that instructed the Capitol Police to 'forbear enforcement' of the ban 'when encountering snow sledders on the grounds.'" The sledders love being next to the capital. Why would they choose capital hill if there wasn't much benefit? I find this article interesting because it shows the commitment people have to the USA and our great capital.
