ESPN has tapped Beth Mowins to call the second part of a season-opening "Monday Night Football" doubleheader in September. She will be the first woman to do play-by-play duties on an NFL game in 30 years.

The network says Mowins will team with former NFL Coach Rex Ryan when the Los Angeles Chargers visit the Denver Broncos. That will be on Sept. 11.

Mowins joined ESPN in 1994. She has called college football for the network since 2005. She has also done play-by-play for preseason Oakland Raiders games that are broadcast locally.

ESPN Senior Vice President Stephanie Druley says Mowins "deserves this opportunity."

Ryan came to ESPN after being fired by the Buffalo Bills last year and he also coached the New York Jets.

The last woman to call an NFL game was NBC's Gayle Sierens in 1987.

Most likely, women don't care about doing one part in a football game or care about football at all. Maybe some women who do like football, don't have the schedule to go there. Also, girls haven't had the same opportunities as men, so they don't think about participating.

I think that is really cool on how a women is commentating a men's sports. That shows that football is not only for boys.

Usually, people expect that women to care about football or basketball. They are being stereotypical. When something like this happens it takes down stereotypical barriers for women. this is a great thing that happens once in a while.

It's good that they are starting to let females do some things that only guys do. they are just as equal as men and deserve everything they do. Just because they don't play the sport does not mean they don't know just as much as you do!

Most women dont understand football well or even at all. People also think that football is really only for guys and not girls weather they are coaches, refs, players,or annuancers.Men underestimate the capablitlty of women all the time so i think its greta that she is going to call games.

I think it is a great opportunity for Mowins to be able to call the NFL game. It's sad that it had been 30 years since the last woman to call a NFL game and I'm glad they are letting her call for the game.
