You asked us, why do flamingos stand on one leg?

Although they're not the only birds to balance delicately on a single limb, flamingos are probably the best known for this yoga-like pose.

Researchers have been scratching their heads trying to figure out the reason behind this soloed stance. And now they think they have an answer . . . thermoregulation.

What they found is that flamingos tend to do a lot more one-legged lounging when they are standing in water. And when the temperatures are on the colder side.  Which makes sense if the birds are trying to maintain their body temperature.

You see, a long naked leg exposes lots of skin to cool temps and water. That sucks away heat faster than air. But, if flamingos tuck that same leg up into their down parka of a body, it stays toasty warm.

It's likely the behavior also reduces the birds' exposure to things like fungus and parasites in the water.

Nice! I mean, Namaste.

The article stated that scientist believe it's thermoregulation. Flamingos stand on one leg mainly when they are in the water to average out their body temperature. They also said that a long naked leg exposes lots of skin to cool temps and water. That sucks away heat faster than air. But, if flamingos tuck that same leg up into their down parka of a body, it stays toasty warm."

One reason flamingos stand on one leg is,because of their legs, they are naked with no fur,so if they put one of them up,then they would stay warmer.

Flamingos stand on one leg to stay warm when the water is cooler. I have always wondered why they do this and now I finally have an answer.

Because their legs get cold and it helps them stay warmer by tucking their one leg in their feathers.

I think that is it super cool that the flamingo puts its leg up to stay warm. Its also cool because it helps the flamingo avoid parasites.

The main idea of this story is that researchers are trying to figure out why flamingos stand on one leg.

Fact 1 flamingos stand on one leg so they do not loose heat as fast
Fact 2 standing on one leg also helps to reduce exposure to parasites
Fact 3 they also stand on one leg because of thermoregulation witch is maintaining body heat

    4) Thermoregulation could not have happened in the 20th century because there was less technology. This happened in the 21th century because we have had more studies and technology to figure out why flamingoes stand on one leg. technology has been a huge part of this quest to find out why flamingoes stand on one leg. But most importantly scientist finally cared and did not stop trying and because of that they did more studies about flamingos and found out that flamingoes put their leg up because they need to stay warm and protect themselves from parasites.
