You asked us, "Why did ancient Greeks and Romans eat lying down?"

Reclining and dining in ancient Greece started at least as early as the 7th century BCE. It was later picked up by the Romans.

They ate lying down while others served them. It was a sign of power and luxury enjoyed by the elite. People further down the social ladder copied the laid-back dining style, if they could afford to.

I mean, who wouldn't want to stretch out while chowing down?

But not everyone was so lucky in ancient Greece. You see, women didn't generally get invited to banquets except for rare occasions like wedding feasts. Even then they had to sit upright.

It was only in ancient Rome that customs changed, allowing upper-class women to lounge alongside men.

Sounds sweet.  But all that lying down and eating can't have been good for the heartburn.

To answer the question I would think the people further down in the social ladder would copy people above them because they want others to think of them as equal. The second thing I want to say is that I really love Greek and Roman mythology but I didn't even know that they ate while lying down it was interesting to learn about.

I liked this article because it told me a little about the Ancient Greeks and Romans. I also liked this article because I was surprised that as far back as 7th century BCE ancient Greeks ate while lying down.

People "further down the social ladder" copied people above them because they found out that people above them got to eat lying down and they thought it was a good idea.

People further down the social ladder copied this style of dining because they thought it was a luxury. "It was a sign of power and luxury enjoyed by the elite." So people further down chose to do this to make them feel empowered and give them the feeling of luxury.

I found this article interesting because I have tried to eat while laying down and its not very easy, I almost chocked myself. I was surprised that eating while laying down was gave people a feeling of luxury, to me its just lazy and impotite.

Greeks and Romans "Further down the social ladder" copied people above them because they wanted to also been seen as powerful and luxury, as stated in paragraph 3. I found this very interesting, as I didn't even know that Greeks and Romans ate lying down before I read this article.

The author's purpose for writing this article is to inform the reader. I learned that in Ancient Greece, even wealthy women were not allowed to dine laying down. Also, eating while laying down was a symbol of power. The opinion I agree with is that these customs "sound sweet," because having people wait on you is very luxurious. However, it's unfair that the women weren't treated equally.

People further down the social ladder copied the people of higher class because it made them look rich and powerful. In my opinion, it was funny that laying down gave them a sense of luxury. Scientifically, it is difficult to eat while laying down. Obliviously, the rich and powerful that were mentioned in the article were not well informed about bodily functions. I am sure that they all got heart burn and did not understand why.
