An underwater expedition along the California coast has revealed for the first time a sunken World War II-era aircraft carrier. It once was used in atomic tests in the Pacific.

The expedition was led by famed oceanographer Robert Ballard. It captured the wreckage of the USS Independence. The ship was located half a mile under the sea in the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary off California.

Scientists aboard the ocean research ship Nautilus lowered two unmanned submersibles to the ocean floor. They also found a Hellcat fighter plane, anti-aircraft guns, hatches and the ship's name on the hull.

"What's so wonderful about the wrecks in deeper water, like this ship . . . is that they are in amazing states of preservation," Ballard said. "There's very little change."  The Navy was scuttled the Independence in 1951.

"The deep sea is the largest museum on Earth," Ballard added.

Samples of marine life growing on the ship will be brought onboard the Nautilus. They will be tested for possible radioactivity. It would be remaining from the bomb tests. The samples also will be analyzed for the effects of climate change.

Scientists plan to explore the wreckage of a historic steam yacht from 1886 and the freighter Dorothy Windermote. The exploration is part of the four-month expedition.

Earlier in August, the Nautilus team discovered a "googly eyed" stubby squid while combing the sea floor off the California coast. Video of the researchers delighting in the discovery became an Internet sensation. To watch round-the-clock video of the expedition, visit www.nautiluslive.org.

An Oceanographer named Robert Ballard found a sunken ship.
I really like this article because I like underwater stuff.

A famed oceanographer named Robert Ballard found a War world II era aircraft carrier. He also found a Hellcat fighter plane. i liked this article because I would like to learn about the Oceans.

The fact that they can find ships in one piece in the middle of the ocean is pretty cool.

I believe a plane may have been found with the ship because they might have needed it to observe some of the atomic materials from above. Also it might be the result of a failed escape plan. Possibly people may have tried to get off the ship through the plane but may have already been underwater. Also if neighboring lands saw that atomic materials were being tested nearby they might perceive it as a threat. In the text is says "Found a Hellcat fighter plane," That means that the plane could fight if anyone tried to harm the ship in any way.

This article is really cool. Now that explorers found this they will explore more of the Pacific oceans and find other exciting things.

A plane was found with the ship because the plane had their extra weapons in it. Also on the hull of the plane they found hatches and the ships name. In my opinion I think this discovery is absolutely amazing. This ship and the plane would let us know so much about our worlds history and what people did during wars.

I had no idea that there was a sunken ship at the bottom of an ocean. I wish they told me more about it. Like was there a dead on that ship.

The plane was found with the ship because the ship that sunk was a aircraft carrier and so maybe a plane got shot down right as the aircraft carrier was sinking.

Aircraft carriers usually carry planes, and other types of aircraft, the plane was probably on the aircraft carrier when it sunk. I think the plane was found with the ship because the plane was probably on the ship when it sunk

A plane was found with the ship because it was an aircraft carrier. The aircraft carrier most likely had the plane onboard when it went under the water.
