A northern Ohio teenager is reeling in attention for a big catch after he spotted a 3-foot carp swimming in receding floodwaters on his street and scooped it into his arms as his mother caught the scene on video.

North Royalton resident Jake Sawyer, 16, waded through more than ankle-deep water as he stalked the big fish in the dark Monday night and eventually trapped it.

First he tried to throw a towel over it to stun it. He said when that didn't work, he tried to push it toward a curb.

"I just slowly put my hand on it, and then once it got comfortable with me, I just kind of bear-hugged it and lifted it up," he said.

Sawyer said heavy rains that day had caused flash-flooding as high as his mailbox, and he suspects the large grass carp slipped out of a nearby pond as the water rose.

He said he wanted to ensure the fish didn't become trapped and die in the street, so he carried it back to the pond. He estimates it weighed 40 pounds.

"I think our only option was to put it in the pond," he said. "I mean, I could've put it in my pool, but it would've died."

The result, he said, is one fishing tale he'll never forget.

Critical thinking challenge: Why would the fish have died in the pool? How is pool water different than pond water?

Of course the fish would've died in the pool. The pool has chlorine in it, or saltwater depending on the owners, and it's bad for animals. It's basically poison so it's a good thing that he carried the carp to the pond.

Wow!!!He caught that fish all by himself. This is very genorous of him.He knew that the fish could die if he didn't take it out of the pool.He should be rewarded for his georosity.

I wonder how big the fish is in inches or something.
I don't thing it's a good idea to catch a fish with your bear hands, without a shirt on.
I also don't think it's a good idea to be outside when their's a flood on your street.

The fish would have died in the pool because pools have chlorine and fish breathe only breathe fresh water. Pool water is different from pond water because it has chlorine. Pond water has fresh water.

Welp...Thats pretty cool. I think his hands would have a few lacerations from picking up a a fish that big and heavy. Its a good thing he took it back to the pond and not the pool because chlorine pools are poisonous to fish. So yeah! Thats really neat!

This thing is really big, i think that it would be pretty cool to have though, some people like to hang it up on the wall. Some people would be really proud to get it. he should feel special.

The fish would've died in the pool because it's fresh water. The pool is cleaner than a pond because the pond has more algae then a pool.
