Who says kids don't read? Not Taylor Swift.

The superstar made a stop on her tour promoting her new album to share her passion for reading and writing. She met with a gaggle of New York City public school kids and 100 more on computer screens via Skype from classrooms in Michigan and California.

Swift, whose "1989" may debut at No. 1 this week, is a lifelong lover of books and writing, particularly songwriting. But she said after chatting with the tweens and teens at Scholastic that she isn't ruling out other writing projects.

She's already an unpublished novelist. At 13 or 14, she wrote a 400-page book based on her life and friends. She had left them behind during a summer away with her family.

"But since then, I've discovered music and that's the form of writing that inspires me the most," Swift said. "What if I end up writing a script or a book, or a book of poetry or something? That would be so amazing. I would love to see that happen."

Her meetup with the kids at the book publisher's headquarters was turned into a 30-minute video available at Scholastic.com. In it, she urges more young people to "open a world of possible" through books.

The students on Skype from Troy, Michigan, and Poway, California, had made signs declaring the superstar awesome. The in-person New Yorkers offered Swift their book recommendations. Among them: "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls and "Out of My Mind" by Sharon Draper.

And Harry Potter, natch.

The book ideas were timely for Swift as she prepares for a few lengthy flights. Making and promoting her fifth album has left her out of the loop on what to read, she said.

"I definitely walked away with a few suggestions, which I appreciate because with the way the schedule's been it's kind of lower priority and it shouldn't be," Swift said.

I think it is amazing that Taylor encourages young adults to read. More actors should do that. A lot of people look up to Taylor.

I love that a famous singer would tell kids to read and write because when they know Taylor Swift likes they might give it a try. Novels, poems, songwriting, it's all the same they all are pretty much just putting the writer's thoughts into writing. I hope that it will help more kids to read and write.

Poetry, novels and songwriting have in common that all of them require a very creative person to create an interesting piece of art. It is necessary that through words, you express your feelings, ideas, thoughts, or knowledge of something. And if you are writing a song, for example, it is necessary that you try to catch your audience with your songs, the same happens with novels and poetry because you need to create something that represents a person, or at least, you have to captivate the attention of your fans or detractors, so as to make them feel that you are good at what you are doing. And for me, it is really good to show the example of Taylor Swift because she is a complete artist, in terms of creative writing in different art expressions, such as songwriting or novels. I feel that all of us can express our feelings or thoughts through word in a song or a poem, we just need to let go the ideas in our mind, so as to create art.

I read the article "Taylor Swift Wants You to Read". This article is about Taylor Swift helping kids by encouraging them to show writing is important. Writing is important to Taylor because she is a songwriter. Writing is her passion along with music. She skyped with various schools in California and Michigan, and she showed how reading and writing are important to life. Taylor Swift is one of my favorite singers. I think it is great how she is encouraging kids to write.

I loved this article because Taylor is right about how younger kids and adults should open a world of possibility by reading a good book. Taylor is right how anyone could just write a book. What I was thinking was that if you don't think and just do it you can succeed at any thing you want to. I would love to be able to write a good book but writing just isn't my thing my thing is reading the great books other people write and are lucky enough to get it published.

I think this is very inspirational because Taylor Swift tells students that reading is like the best thing to do in their lives. Like her, she wants students to read more often because it opens a new world of possible things. I think Taylor Swift will get the books that the students suggested and read them. I wonder how Taylor Swift met the gaggle of kids on Skype. Did they video call? I don't think so because I think the students met Taylor Swift in their own classroom.

I don't listen to Taylor Swift and I don't like her, but I think that her passion for writing is something that I encourage her with. I think that her love with writing makes her so famous because she writes her own songs. I think that she is a role model to a lot of people, and I understand why they like her so much. I hope that her words (she urges more young people to "open a world of possible" through books) get spread out to world.
