President Barack Obama is launching a version of "take your child to work day." It is focused on America's science laboratories. That is instead of its corporate workspaces.

It's part of Obama's effort to encourage young people, especially girls and minorities. The president wants more of them to pursue careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.

More than 50 national labs in 20 states will open their doors to approximately 5,000 students. The labs hope to help spark interest by exposing the students to the scientists, engineers and lab employees who carry out important work and research at facilities in their communities.

The students include some from communities aligned with Obama's "My Brother's Keeper" initiative. They will participate in mentoring sessions. Those will include hands-on experiments and other activities. My Brother's Keeper is a public-private initiative. It was started by Obama to help boys and young men of color stay on the right path. The White House Council on Women and Girls is also involved.

Obama's initiative is called "National Week at the Labs." It coincides with February's end of Black History Month and the start of Women's History Month in March.

"It's an exciting time to think about how we're pulling all the children of our country into technology and STEM and the jobs of the future," Megan Smith told The Associated Press. She is chief technology officer in the Office of Science and Technology Policy at the White House.

She said some 600,000 U.S. technology jobs are unfilled. Those jobs pay significantly higher salaries.

Obama says it's good for the country when young people are excited about science.

"Being pro-science is the only way we make sure that America continues to lead the world," he told Popular Science magazine.

Obama started the annual White House Science Fair. He said budding scientists should be celebrated as much as Super Bowl football teams. The administration is also more than halfway toward his goal of training 100,000 new math and science teachers. The goal is to reach that number by 2021, he said.

"We want the next game-changing industry or life-saving breakthrough to happen right here in the United States," he said.

The president might have wanted to launch national week at science labs which would make a lot of the students to be coming with their parents that work in science labs that would even make the students to be working with science. The people might have wanted to get all of the students to be working with science while their parent are still working at the science lab at work. The students might have gotten in the program when president Barack Obama had first launched the national weeks at the science labs which people would like the students to be working in the labs. People might have like to get more students to be working in the labs for week which people would most likely to get more students to be motivated with technology jobs.
Critical Thinking Question: Give two reasons why technology jobs are so important.
Answer: One reason is that technology might have gotten more advanced for people and another reason is to get more people to be motivated with technology jobs.

Technology Jobs are so important because they are being used more in our society today, and they have higher salary that could do for the country. Also, because technology jobs include scientists and more jobs on medical fields could help us get ahead in medicine and treatment.
I thought this was a very helpful article because right now, everyone uses technology, we almost can't lie without it, and by putting younger children with technology at a young age, we are increasing the amount of children to grow up and do technology related jobs.

its good to bring kids to work because they get to see what you do and see different people and meet people they haven't seen before.

I think it would be beneficial to participate in something like that. It would be cool to do it.

Two reasons that technology jobs are so important is because it teaches people so many new things as it says in paragraph 2 and it also helps encourage minorities and girls in life more also in paragraph 2. This is so important because so many people are learning subjects like math and science due to technology as it says in paragraph 2.

Two reasons why technology jobs are so important are to make a break through in the field to help the future. The other reason is to make game-changing industries. I know this because in the last paragraph it says "We want the next game-changing industry or life-saving breakthrough to happen right here in the United States." I also found this because in the text it says "Being pro-science is the only way we make sure that America continues to lead the world."

Technology jobs are so important because some of those technology jobs are scientists and engineers, which are very important and technology jobs will help get more jobs for people and minorities. In the text it states, "The labs hope to help spark interest by exposing the students to the scientists, engineers and lab employees who carry out important work and research at facilities in their communities." That is why technology jobs are so important and should be around.

Two reasons why technology jobs are so important is because in paragraph eight it says that "She said some 600,000 U.S. technology jobs are unfilled. Those jobs pay significantly higher salaries." Also because in paragraph nine it says "Obama says it's good for the country when young people are excited about science."

Two reasons why technology is so important is technology helps America stay in the lead. In the text, it states,"Being pro-science is the only way we make sure that America continues to lead the world,". Technology jobs also pay more so if someone has that job, they can support themselves or their families. You can find this information in the seventh paragraph. It states,"Those jobs pay significantly higher salaries." So, if more people have these jobs and their salary is high, I believe this will help America's economy.

Technology jobs are important because these fields are what makes this country so advanced. The author states, "being pro science is the only way to make sure America continues to rule the world,". This shows that without scientist and STEM majors, the US would no longer be able to produce unique inventions and ideas. Also, the author states, "Those jobs pay significantly higher salaries." Americas entire GDP would improve with more technology jobs.
