There is reason to envy Jusuf Arifajic's cows. His animals sleep on mattresses in a barn with a computerized air conditioning and lighting system. They are bathed regularly, get a massage whenever they feel like it and receive the occasional pedicure.

Relaxing music makes sure milking is not stressful.

"Nobody should envy my cows. Everybody should just realize that the visa for the future is science," said Jusuf Arifajic, the 52-year-old farmer everybody around Kozarac in northwestern Bosnia is talking about.

Arifajic and his 25 employees monitor every corner of the rubber-floored barn on computer screens. Most of the animals prefer to hang out by the six automatic car wash-style brushes, enjoying massages. A computer regulates the temperature, the quality of air and the lighting, keeping the cows healthy.

Arifajic's calculation: Pampered cows give five liters more of milk a day. Multiply that by hundreds of cows and "although initially expensive, advanced technology really pays off in just a few years," he said.

Arifajic brought the concept of pampering cows from Norway, where he lived as a refugee after fleeing from Bosnia's 1992-95 war.

Arifajic invested $11 million into the farm that started four months ago with the importation of 115 Norwegian Red Cows. The animals are a tough and hornless animal bred over the past 75 years to produce more and better milk. Arifajic wants to eventually expand to 5,000 cows.

Critical thinking challenge: How does the farmer get an ROI (return on investment) by spending money to pamper his cows?

These special cows get pampered better then some people! Although farmer Arifajic has invested eleven million dollars into this farm it sure does pay off. Now that the cows are producing five liters more milk it can do some wonders for his upgrades to make the cows even more comfortable. With most of the high-tech machines these cows are sure to last a long time. Hopefully Arifajic will able to expand his luxurious farm to five-thousand cows very soon.

He pampers his cows. That is good. He will get a ROI because if he keeps selling the milk, then he will make even more money and eventually make more money than he started with.

I think it's so cool that the cows get that because some people in the world don't even get that . I think it's crazy (in a good way) that they are getting treated like humans.

I think that the farmer gets a ROI (return on investment) after spending money to pamper cows. The more milk the cow produces the more money the farmer makes after selling milk.

The farmer probably gets a lot of money from the milk his cows make, and the tough if he plans on killing any cows, but he probably won't.

Doesn't all that stuff cost more than the milk that the cow gives? Although the cows give 5 liters more of milk a day, I think it would be just fine for him not to have the cows pampered like that.

WOW. really you would spend $11 million just to pamper cows! I don't even get massages or pedicures a lot, but no these cows get it every day.

I think that Arifajic method of pampering his cows is a win win situation. The cows get pampered, and it is easier and less stressful for him to get milk. I think that Arifajic gets more money even tho he is spending money for the cows. I am guessing he doesn't have to hire anyone to milk the cows, because the cows don't mind so to don't cause racket.
