President Barack Obama has invited President-elect Donald Trump to meet with him. They plan to discuss the handover of power from his administration to Trump's.

The White House said Obama, a Democrat, called the Republican in the early hours of Nov. 9. Obama congratulated Trump on his victory. The result marked a forceful rebuke by voters to Obama's eight years in office. The two leaders will meet today, Thursday, Nov. 10, at the White House. Obama was to update Trump about planning for the transition.

Obama was to offer his first reaction to the election in a televised statement. The White House said Obama would focus on "what steps we can take as a country to come together after this hard-fought election season."

"Ensuring a smooth transition of power is one of the top priorities the president identified at the beginning of the year. And a meeting with the president-elect is the next step," White House press secretary Josh Earnest said in a statement.

For Obama, the act of holding the meeting is a blow to his legacy. It also hurts his hopes for leaving a lasting imprint on the nation's policies. Trump has vowed to rip up much of what Obama accomplished. They include his signature health care law, the Iran nuclear deal and a painstakingly negotiated trade deal with Asia.

Obama also called Hillary Clinton after it became clear she'd lost. The White House said Obama had "expressed admiration for the strong campaign she waged throughout the country."

It was unclear how substantive Obama's call was with Trump. Or, how long it lasted. The White House noted that Obama placed the call from his residence in the White House.

Trump's campaign manager is Kellyanne Conway. She described the call as a "warm conversation" and a "gracious exchange." She said Trump had missed the president's original call. He was speaking to supporters in New York. Trump called him back.

Like Clinton and other Democrats, Obama didn't appear to see Trump's victory coming. As he campaigned vigorously for Clinton, Obama said he was confident. When Americans showed up to vote, he said, they'd choose against electing the billionaire. Trump made his fortune in real estate. He also is a former reality TV star. He has no formal government experience.

Obama had warned supporters that "the fate of the republic" rested on Clinton defeating Trump.

I think so many people were so surprise about Trump winning because Hillary had a good career and what Trump has been saying bad things. People could of been surprise because no one liked trump and when he said he will bomb Isis out and him causing on T.V. Alot of people think that he did do something to women but I think it was confirmed that he didn't. This is my opinion why I think people were surprise about Trump winning.

So many people were surprised over Trump's victory because Clinton was leading in so many states. Personally, I like Trump and I was honestly shocked to know he actually won.

It's strange of how much Obama spoke against Trump, and now he is being forced to hand his office over to him. It has been pretty clear that Obama has not been fond of Trump, and that he would have rather seen Secretary Clinton be elected. But in the end, the government's own electoral college came around to bite them in the behind.

People were surprised about Trump's victory because to some people he look like a good guy. Trump got less votes and still won. Trump said that he was going to do things some people like or don't like. Those are reasons why people were surprised by Trumps victory.

Everybody thought that Hillary was going to win. But Donald Trump won and he also won like every state in the middle of the United States. People thought that Hillary was going to win because her campaign was good and because Donald Trump was saying some mean things. But Donald Trump won and he did have less popularity votes but he had more electoral votes. He also said that he will make america great again. He also might do something people like or do not like.

People were surprised because Donald Trump won and he has no experience in government. I think Hillary Clinton should have won because she has some government experience. Also I think they would both be good presidents.
