Scientists say they have discovered what might be a new species of octopus. It was found as researchers searched the Pacific Ocean floor near the Hawaiian Islands.

On Feb. 27, a team found a small light-colored octopus at a depth of about 2.5 miles. It was in the ocean near Necker Island. This is according to Michael Vecchione of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The octopus did not have fins. All of its suckers were in one row on each arm, Vecchione said.

The octopus "did not seem very muscular." And it was light colored, he said.

"This resulted in a ghostlike appearance, leading to a comment on social media that it should be called Casper, like the friendly cartoon ghost. It is almost certainly an undescribed species, " he said in the statement. The statement was posted on the NOAA website.

It's unusual to find an octopus without fins so deep in the ocean, said Vecchione.  He noted that the previous depths at which an octopus without fins was found were less than 4,000 meters. That is about 2.5 miles.

Two scientists he has consulted "agreed that this is something unusual and is a depth record," said Vecchione. He works with NOAA's National Systematics Laboratory.

The octopus was discovered during a search of the ocean floor by a remotely operated vehicle from NOAA's Okeanos Explorer, he said.

They didn't discover the octopus before possibly because it was about 2.5 miles down and that is relatively deep in the ocean making it harder to travel there. Also it probably hasn't been discovered yet because the ocean is still a huge place and maybe they just coincidentally never saw it while making submarine expedition your using underwater camera's.It was probably just a coincidence that they saw it now to.

I think the octopus was never discovered before because it's unusual for an octopus to be found that deep in the ocean, as Vecchione said it's unusual to find and octopus without fins so deep in the ocean.

This octopus was never discovered before because they said that it is unusual to find an octopus that deep in the ocean with out fins. But that story was interesting!

This octopus was not discovered before because in the article it says that it's rare to find octopuses without fins deep into the oceans.

It'S strange that an octopus no one has discovered is in the ocean. It's cool and existing but strange too.

Probably because of it being 2.5 miles deep. Also if the ever did a search before this one, then they could have had just avoided it since they said that it was almost ghostly looking.

I love that people are starting to explore more of the ocean. I know people are exploring usually all the time now but the ocean is where it is all at! I mean we have only discovered about 7% of the ocean let's keep going!!

It was far away and very deep under (2.5 miles away).

The new octopus had been discovered as the new species of octopus to be found near one of the islands of Hawaii which people would be finding out the new species of octopus without fins in the deep sea. The octopus that had been discovered in a deep place in the Pacific would be the new species of octopus to be discovered. The glowing thing that had been glowing underwater had been the octopus that is producing its own light in the dark ocean. The ghost-like appearance had made people to be seeing that there is another kind of octopus species that can glow underwater and don't have fins.
Critical Thinking Question: Why was this octopus not discovered before?
Answer: I know why this octopus was not discovered before because of its glowing light underwater which made people to think that it could be another one of those fish that can glow underwater that they know already instead of knowing that it is an octopus.
