Fourteen new species of dancing frogs have been found in the jungle mountains of southern India.

The tiny amphibians earned their name with the unusual kicks they use to attract mates. One problem, though. The species declined in number during the 12 years in which Indian scientists studied them. The frogs breed after the yearly monsoon in fast-rushing streams. But their habitat appears to be becoming increasingly dry.

The frogs are found exclusively in the Western Ghats, a lush mountain range that stretches 1,600 kilometers (990 miles) from the western state of Maharashtra down to the country's southern tip.

When the males dance, it's actually a unique breeding behavior called foot-flagging. The frogs stretch, extend and whip their legs out to the side to draw the attention of females. The females might have trouble hearing mating croaks over the sound of water flowing through streams.

The bigger the frog, the more they dance. They also use those leg extensions to smack away other males, which is important considering the ratio for the amphibians is usually around 100 males to one female.

These are tiny, delicate frogs no bigger than a walnut.

The Western Ghats, older than the Himalayas, is among the world's most biologically exciting regions. It holds at least a quarter of all Indian species. Yet in recent decades, the region has faced a constant assault by mining, water pollution, unregulated farming and loss of habitat to human settlements.

Critical thinking challenge: Why must frogs dance instead of croaking to get attention?

I think its cool how frogs "dance" to mate. This just shows that species are getting more interesting with different types of animals and how they evolve to other animals and their own kind.

The picture is a good one because of the technology we have today. All the things they find out about these frogs is because we have good technology we have today. The way they can let people know about these frogs is because of technology. And they can google all about these frogs because they have technology.

I'm not surprised that there are new species of frogs. There are a lot of new species that scientist have not found yet. such as the new species of whale, and dolphins etc.

This article is about newly discovered species of frogs. These certain frogs have an unique quality, the can dance. When they dance scientist say this is their way of breeding. Also these creatures are no bigger than the size of a walnut. The ratio is 1 female to about 100 males so there is a lot of competition for the females. This article was interesting because I didn't know that any species would a way of breeding.

I think that the new species of dancing frogs are amazing and very funny. The thing that is amazing able the new dancing frogs is that they are the size of a walnut and they use their feet to show attraction to the female frogs. What really is funny is able is that the frogs kick the other males, so that the other frogs won't go after the female frog that they chose.
Critical thinking challenge: Why must frogs dance instead of croaking to get attention?
Answer: I think that the frogs need to dance instead of croaking because dancing takes a more liking then just a normal croak.

I think this an amazing discovery because you can't discover 14 new species in one place (well, it is possible but it is an extremely low chance). Some, like the recently found Titanosaur, was found only once. Discoveries like this are uncommon because discovering new species are very uncommon. The people who found these dancing frogs are very lucky to find new species. Finds like this are unusual because we are used to the animals that were already discovered.
Critical Thinking Challenge: Why must frogs "dance" instead of croaking to get attention?
Answer: Frogs must dance because the females might have trouble hearing mating croaks over the sound of the stream and frogs dance so males can compete for one female.

The western Ghats is a biologically exciting region because of all the interesting species of animals that live there, like 14 species of dancing frogs. The frogs are called dancing frogs because in order for them to attract a female they have to do unusual kicks, which look like a dance. The bigger the frog the more they dance, but their maximum size is the size of a walnut. There are about 100 males for every female so the frogs have to attract the female very well. The size of the frogs' population has decreased side scientists have started studying them. That is so funny how the frogs look like they are dancing. I hope that more females would come, so the population could increase to its normal size.

This article is about a new species of frogs that are being studied that were found in the Western Ghats in southern India. These delicate frogs are known to "dance" and earned that name by kicking out their legs to attract female attention. These frogs use foot-flagging because female frogs may not be able to hear their croaks over the sound of rushing water.

Wow! These frogs seem very interesting! They must have to fight a lot in order to attract a female! It's very unique how they can dance with their legs to attract attention instead of croaking!
