Meccano Visionary Series – Elon Musk (Meccano)
Meccano Visionary Series – Elon Musk

Like many other inventors such as Steve Jobs, Sir Alec Issigonis and Steve Wozniak, Musk spent his childhood, satisfying his hunger for knowledge by learning to code and tinkering with various building sets such as the Meccano construction sets, also known as Erector sets in other parts of the world.

Unlike LEGO sets which were comprised of square and rectangular blocks, Meccano sets allow for some truly creative builds, even better for those that were creating their own ideas, rather than building from predefined instructions. This meant that bright minds such as Musk had complete creative freedom to satisfy their creative senses and come up with some truly impressive, and that of course still holds true today.

Elon Musk has made quite a name for himself as an engineer, but more importantly an inventor. Known for many famous inventions such as the Tesla line of cars, or the incredibly impressive SpaceX Falcon rocket, six of which were already sent on resupply missions to the International Space Center.

Aside from high tech-cars and space-faring rockets, he also went on to create and patent some extremely useful services that we now use on a daily basis. For instance, what is now, a globally accepted form of payment, was previously, and later bought by Ebay in 2002. As far as patents go, Musk patented the idea of web-based calls, something that's used on a daily basis by millions of people thanks to services like Skype. Location-specific searches, meaning when you're looking for a great restaurant to eat near you, was also patented in 1998.

Elon Musk continues to be an entrepreneur in the world of technology, with ideas such as Hyperloop, which will allow commuters to travel between LA and San Francisco in less than 35 minutes as well as the ambitious Electric Jet which would have a vertical takeoff and landing, meaning it would eliminate the need for long runways, and thus making airports a lot smaller.

His brilliant mind was undoubtedly shaped by his childhood, whether it was hours teaching himself how to code his very first game Blastar, or building his own inventions using Meccano.

I like how they compared building legos and then they build the real thing that kids make.

It is interesting that an entrepreneur was able to have the idea of the hyperloop.

I think it's interesting that he owns so any companies and is so creative he can think of what he wants to invent and then he does it.

I think that this concept is really cool and kids would probably enjoy building stuff.

I think the Meccano constructions sets are a good idea because they get kids t think more creatively than legos.
