It happened! Cubs win ends World Series drought
Lexile

Third baseman Kris Bryant started to smile even before he fielded the ball. And with his throw to first for the final out, the agonizing wait 'til next year was over at last.

For a legion of fans who waited a lifetime, the Chicago Cubs are World Series champions.

Ending more than a century of flops, futility and frustration, the Cubs won their first title since 1908. They beat the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in 10 innings of a Game 7 thriller in the Ohio city. The game did not end until early Thursday.

The Cubs and their fans even had to endure an extra-inning rain delay to end the drought.

"It happened. It happened. Chicago, it happened," first baseman Anthony Rizzo said after gloving the ball for the final out. "We did it. We're world champions. I can't believe it."

Rizzo put that final ball in his pocket as the Cubs piled up in the middle of the diamond. Catcher David Ross got carried off the field by his teammates and comedian Bill Murray partied in the clubhouse.

Lovable losers for generations, the Cubs nearly let this one get away, too. All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman blew a 6-3 lead with two outs in the eighth. That's when the Indians' Rajai Davis hit a tying, two-run home run.

But the Cubs, after tormenting their fans one more time, came right back after a 17-minute rain delay before the top of the 10th.

Series MVP Ben Zobrist hit an RBI double and Miguel Montero singled home a run to make it 8-6. Davis delivered an RBI single with two outs in the bottom half. But Mike Montgomery closed it out at 12:47 a.m. And the celebration was on.

Cubs' manager Joe Maddon's team halted the longest stretch without a title in baseball. The Cubs also became the first club to overcome a 3-1 Series deficit since the 1985 Kansas City Royals.

"This is an epic game. It's epic. I can't believe we were able to do it - 108 years in the making," Zobrist said. "We did it."

Cleveland was trying to win its first crown since 1948, but manager Terry Francona's club lost the last two games at home.

Zobrist got a Series-high 10 hits, a year after he helped the Royals win the championship. Zobrist was among the players brought to the Cubs by Theo Epstein, the baseball guru who added another crown to his collection. He also assembled the Red Sox team that broke Boston's 86-year drought by winning in 2004.

While Cubs fans hugged with delight, there was only despair for the Indians, who now have gone longer than anyone without a crown.

"It's going to hurt. It hurts because we care, but they need to walk with their head held high because they left nothing on the field," Francona said.

After defeating San Francisco and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the playoffs, Chicago became the first team to earn a title by winning Games 6 and 7 on the road since the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates.

Twenty-one other teams had won the World Series since the Cubs last were champions. They reached the top again on the 39,466th day after Orval Overall's three-hit shutout won the 1908 finale at Detroit in a game that took 1 hour, 24 minutes. This latest Game 7 lasted 4:24, not including the rain delay.

Back then, Theodore Roosevelt was president, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii were not yet states and the first Ford Model T car was two weeks old.

The Cubs had not even reached the Series since 1945.

"It was just an epic battle," Zobrist said. "Just blow for blow, everybody playing their heart out. The Indians never gave up, either, and I can't believe we're finally standing, after 108 years, finally able to hoist the trophy."

Baseball games are delayed by rain and football games are not because the baseball field is mostly dirt and grass when a football field is just grass so if the dirt gets super wet the field gets muddy and the players can play in it. But a football field is just grass so it doesn't get as muddy as a baseball field would have.

Baseball games are delayed by rain, but football games are not because there is more dirt on the field in baseball. There is running in football, but not as much as in baseball. In baseball the players have to slide as well. Most football fields have rain covers that can go over the stadium. Football players also have a little bit more gear than baseball players.

Baseball games are delayed in the rain because of the certain conditions for a fair baseball game. The game of football is played in rain because of how its mostly a grounded sport that dose not mainly consist on the sky. While baseball is most of the playing time is on the sky where the ball could be rigged in the weather. This would also affect the way how the players react or play in the rain.

Baseball games are delayed by rain but football games are not because baseball players can't play their best when it's raining. You could slip and cause yourself and your team the entire game. Football players tackle each other and fall on the ground, so it wouldn't have a huge effect. Also, when the ball is slippery and wet it can be hard to throw.

Baseball games are delayed by rain, but football games are not because the field in baseball gets real clumpy. When the field gets clumpy the players aren't able to slide because they might get injured. Also how hard the ball is thrown it could slip out of his hand and seriously injure someone. Its also really hard to run with huge dirt clumps stuck to your cleats,it feels like weights. In football games most of the football fields are turf meaning they can play when it is raining. The dirt in the ground if the field isnt turf is not as sticky that it sticks to your cleats like in baseball.

I cant believe the cubs won the world series because they haven't won one since 1908 and that's a long time. The reason i know about this game is because i watched it the night it was on.The MVP was so lucky because he got a trophy and they gave him a car called the 2017 chevrolet camaro SS 50th Anniversary edition.

Baseball games are delayed by rain because that can cause the ball to get slippery and the hitter can't hit it. Football games are not delayed by rain because nothing gets slippery and because of the kind of shoes they have they won't fall. "But the Cubs, after tormenting their fans one more time, came right back after a 17-minute rain delay before the top of the 10th." It wouldn't be fair if baseball players had to play because their hands can get wet and the bat might slip out of their hands or while running they can slip and fall and injure themselves and it wouldn't be fair.

Baseball games are delayed by rain while football is not because it can effects the playing quality and the players safety. The only delay that football will have is if there is lightning or a hurricane."The Cubs and their fans even had to endure an extra-inning rain delay to end the drought.". The cubs have broken the curse!

I can't believe that it was 108 years since they last time they won the world series in 1908.

Baseball games are delayed by rain but football games aren't because, they play in full dirt and it will get really wet and dirty. WHich means the runners won't be able to run well when they do the turn, and there shoes aren't well for the weather. On the other hand, Football players have good gear and helmets which wouldn't really be affected much by the rain. And their cleats are good for the ground.
