Ever wonder what's really underneath that 5,000-year-old mummy's elaborate wrapping?

There will be a rare chance to find out. "Mummies: New Secrets From the Tombs" opens Sept. 18. It will be presented at Los Angeles' Natural History Museum.

Using state-of-the-art CT scans, exhibition curators have looked right through the wrappings. They are examining some two-dozen mummies from Egypt and Peru. The researchers want to learn how the ancient people lived and died.

Large, tabletop computers will be placed alongside the mummies and their artifacts. So museum visitors will be able to do their own exams.

The show is aimed at providing a greater understanding of ancient peoples and their cultures. It is curated by Chicago's Field Museum. The Chicago museum has one of the country's largest mummy collections.

After leaving Los Angeles in January the mummies will travel to several other cities.

WOW! It is so cool that people are opening the mummies to see what it is. I wish to see it too. I think that it was opened a long time ago so I can't see it. If it is actually still doing it I will hope to see it. SO maybe I will figure out i it is still doing it or if it is not.

You need a scanner to see the mummies because the mummies will fall apart if you cut it open. Also because it can tell you how the mummies died. Then you need a scanner because it can tell you how they lived.

We need to use scanners to see right through the wrappings of the mummies. It allows scientists to discover more about the ancient world and the people that live there.

They need a scanner to see the mummies because the mummies are warped up in cloth to keep them from decomposing. And scientist don't want to unwrap the mummies and have the mummies fall apart.

You need a scanner to view mummies because you may damage them while doing a physical examination

You need a scanner to see through the mummies. If you cut trough the mummy the mummy will fall apart so now you won't know what is really inside the mummy.

You need a scanner to see the mummies because the scanner can see right through the mummies. Also it will prevent damage againest the mummy rather than unwrapping the mummy. Lastly as stated in the article you need a scanner because it helps you understand how the mummies lived and died. To me this is very cool and awesome because you can see through a mummy and their internal organs.

You need a scanner to see the mummies so the mummy doesn't get damaged while someone is trying to unwrap it. It would be really easy to damage a 5,000 year old mummy. The article says the scanner can see right through the wrapping. I found this article interesting.

This is a really great technology because of this device now they would not have to unwrap the wrapping because if they did a little tiny mistake then the whole skeleton will be ruined and they could only get a little bit of information on the broken skeleton. It would also be able to see through the skeleton without work and it also just not lets you see the mummy but it can let you see the x-ray of the mummy which I think is cool.

I think that this technology is great to have because with this, you could possibly see through walls. The reason why I say this is because you cannot see some things when you use a normal x-ray. This means that with this technology, you can possible see other things then just bones and sockets.
