A rare shark has been pulled up from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. And it's not pretty.

It's called a goblin shark. The shrimp fisherman who caught it in his net said it looked prehistoric. It was about 18 feet long, with razor-sharp teeth.

The 63-year-old fisherman told NBC he's caught other sharks before during his 15 years as a shrimping captain, but this one was way different.

"I didn't know what it was. ... He had some mean-looking teeth and I didn't want to get caught up in those."

Because the sharks usually live very deep -- at depths of about 4,000 feet and mostly in seas near Japan and South Africa -- there isn't a lot known about them. They also have moveable jaws that can expand from their bodies when capturing prey.

The goblin shark caught off Key West is only the second recorded to be found in the Gulf of Mexico. The first one was in 2000.

Critical thinking challenge: How does the goblin sharks jaw help it eat?

The jaws help the shark eat because , the shark has moveable jaws that can expand from their bodies whn they are capturing prey . The shark is like no other . If I was tha fisherman i would have been to scared to pull it out the water . i feel like that 63 year old man is brave . I wouldnt have been able to do someting like that

This was an amazing discovery. A rare prehistoric shark found. I wonder how many more like that shark are in the ocean still. Its jaws help it eat bigger or large amounts of food at one time.

This shark looks really weird it definitely looks prehistoric. I wonder how many more of these there are and why they look like that? Their jaw would help them catch prey easier since their jaws expand from their bodies.

The article is about a 63 year old fisher-man who catches a rare shark called the goblin shark which is not very well known since the sharks live 4000 the fisher-man sayed that he had caught other sharks but this shark is not one of the types of sharks that he caught before at first the fisher-man didn't know what the creature was until later but he didn't want to get caught up in those mean looking teeth.

This shark is extremely weird. I am sure it is from a long time go. I would hate to be bit by one though. I bet it would hurt REALLY bad. Also it would be cool to see one of these in real life. Maybe one day scientists can figure out a way to learn about them.

OK. First that doesn't look like a shark to me... so now i feel like i can't swim in the ocean anymore, don't panic that shark is no where close to me, so stay CALM. We can all understand why this shark is called the GOBLIN shark.
