Some teenagers get driving lessons from their parents. Other teens are taught by licensed instructors.

But Malia Obama isn't your average 16-year-old. Her driving lessons were provided by the U.S. Secret Service.

Asked who taught Malia how to drive, first lady Michelle Obama told celebrity chef and daytime talk-show host Rachael Ray in an interview that it was the armed agents who provide around-the-clock security for the family.

"The Secret Service, actually, because they wouldn't let me in the car with her," Mrs. Obama said in an excerpt of the interview. The excerpt was released by Ray's program.

Mrs. Obama hasn't driven herself in seven or eight years, she said.

She added that driving gives Malia "a sense of normalcy." It helps her feel like the rest of her friends who are also driving.

"And my kids have got to learn how to live in the world like normal kids."

When Ray says that the Obamas seem "so grounded," the first lady replies that her "hope is just to make sure that they (her daughters) come out of this thing as functioning adults, you know?"

Malia also drives herself around Washington, Mrs. Obama said.

"She always has security around but in order for her to learn how to drive she had to drive on her own," the first lady said during a separate interview on "Live! With Kelly and Michael."

"So once she was legally permitted to drive on her own, she gets in her car."

Critical thinking challenge: What is Mrs. Obama referring to as this thing?

i think it is pretty cool that she got her license because now she can feel normal like her friends but she can also just take the limo that they because she's the president's daughter.

The "first daughter", Malia Obama, got her drivers license. The text states that first lady hasn't driven herself in 7 or 8 years. The text also states that the US Secret Service was the one to give Malia her driving lessons. The evidence from the text explains that "this thing" Mrs. Obama is referring to is the fame from her father being the president. Malia can't go out and have a normal life because of "this thing" and for security purposes.

Barack Obama's daughter is getting her license. The text states that Obama's daughter has been getting taught how to drive with a secret service agent. The text also states that they want their daughter to live like normal kids. Evidence from the text suggest that Obama will keep trying to make them live a normal life.

This is really cool and weird at the same time! Like its cool having the secret service teaching you haw to drive but, some of the rules are weird. for example, the first lads inst allowed in the car with her daughter! I wonder if its something like is she gets in an accident they don't want the first lady with her or, maybe being together will make them more of a target. I don't know, i just think this whole secret service thing is really cool but some of the restrictions are weird, i guess they just want everyone safe.

It is so cool that the driving instructors were part of the secret service. What an interesting life it must be like to have those important people helping you when you start driving practice.

I can't imagine being taught to drive by the US secret service. I wonder if it's safe for her to drive around Washington, but I do agree with Michelle Obama about leading a somewhat normal life.

I think that its amazing how the presidents daughter wants to have a "normal life" when her and her family are being followed every where they go with cameras. If I could have a driver and just have to tell them where to go, I think that I would like it. But then I would do exactly what Malia would do because she wants to be able to do everything that she would be able to do if her father wasn't president of The United States. I also think that it was pretty special and a once in a life time experience to have the Secret Service teach you how to drive. When Michele Obama said that her daughter wants to have a "normal life" I think that she meant that it wasn't Malia's choice to be the first daughter and to be on center stage all the time. Also she didn't have a say in what her fathers career was going to be, she as a kid, had to go with the flow and learn how to deal with certain situations that came her way. It is a good decision to have Malia learn how to drive because before she knows it, she will not be in the White House, but she will still have the Secret Service with her for a number of years. Also driving is a privilege and when you start driving it shows responsibility.
