The wirehaired viszla and the coton de tulear are the latest breeds to be added to the nation's premier dog competition. It's the Westminster Kennel Club show, set for Feb. 16-17.

The wirehaired viszla is a rugged, versatile hunter conditioned to withstand frosty Hungarian winters. The coton de tulear is a happy-go-lucky companion from the island of Madagascar. Both will join the pack at the Westminster show next year.

The club's leaders, as well as Luna the coton de tulear and Falko the wirehaired viszla, appeared at a news conference Tuesday.

Luna stood politely as organizers discussed plans for the first Westminster show to include her small-but-sturdy breed. The dog has been dubbed the "royal dog of Madagascar." It's known for its flowing, cotton-like coat and chipper disposition.

"I say they're a big dog in a small dog's boots," Luna's breeder and co-owner, Adrianne Dering of Morgantown, West Virginia, said. The breed initially developed on its own in the island nation off southeastern Africa. Then it became popular with Madagascar's aristocracy and later with French colonists. That's according to the United States of America Coton de Tulear Club. The name is pronounced koh-TOHN du TOO-lay-ahr.

"They're just very adaptable, and they like everybody," Dering said. Prospective owners need to be prepared to brush the dogs' long coats a few times a week, unless they're kept in a shorter cut.

The wirehaired viszla was bred to be a hardy, all-weather hunting aide in the rough terrain of northern Hungary. The name viszla is pronounced VEEZ-shlah. The dog has a brushy coat and somewhat heavier build than its cousin the viszla. But the wirehaired hunters know how to be low-key, too. Falko, owned by Anton Sagh of Montreal, Canada, relaxed on the floor Tuesday.

"They're just phenomenal in the field," but "really easygoing to live with," Wirehaired Vizsla Club of America President Jean Schroeder of Wanatah, Indiana, said by phone. The dogs benefit from a yard to run in or a few-mile walk each day.

Breeds are added to the Westminster show after the American Kennel Club recognizes them. There are 180 AKC-recognized breeds.

Critical thinking challenge: Why must the wirehaired viszla be hardy?

My dog is a Coton de Tulear. My mom has told me they seem to act like princesses (she is). She also told me that people put this breed into their suit cases and brought them to The United States to start breeding them. I know they are very loyal, loving, and my dog (Sage) loves to greet people at the door. Yorkies tend to pick a favorite of the family members (who take more care of it while it's young). But Sage will greet you not jumping at you. They are really easy to train pets. They are not cheep so save up!

I believe that it is a good idea to finally have a dog that can withstand the cold weather. I think it is very cute to have this dog in a dog show because it might get a lot of votes and win. There are 180 recognized breeds of the wire haired viszla. These are a prefect dog to hunt with in the winter because it can withstand cold weather.

The article I read is about two new breeds of dogs. One of the new dogs is the Wirehaired Viszla. The Wirehaired Viszla is a rugged dog made for the cold and harsh Hungarian winters. The other new type of dog is the Coton de Tulear. The Coton de Tulear is a happy-go-lucky dog from the island of Madagascar.I enjoyed reading this article a lot. I hope someday I will be able to see these two new breeds of wonderful dogs.

I like doggies, so I am glad that they added those dogs to the dog show. Also, one of the breeds is the same breed as one of my friends' dogs. So thank you for adding it to the dog show people.

I also have seen this for the first time, but doesn't it look like a schnauzer? I also didn't know it existed. It's a pretty breed though.

this breed of dog is new to us and is now being added to the premier dog competition. these are both dogs that are very different from all the other "show" dogs. This breed of dog is very different from all the other breeds because it is very different in the looks of the dog but of corse different breeds lokk different but are technically all related. they are all different because we usually breed 2 different dogs and have a mixture of the 2 to make a new breed. And now this breed is being added to the competition.

this was pretty cool finding out about 1 different breed of the dogs and this dog looks very different. i thought this passage was pretty cool and was very informal.

My neighbors have this dog breed and I agree that they are very good at hunting. Their dog is always wanting to go outside to try and find bunnies or whatever other animal. As well as when they said a big dog in small boots, i totally agree because the dog is a very skinny and boney dog but a big figure.
