Congress welcomes sledders on Capitol Hill
Lexile

It took an act of Congress, but the children of Washington were finally welcome to sled on Capitol Hill.

With a major blizzard hitting Washington, the U.S. Capitol Police said Jan. 21 that they wouldn't enforce a sledding ban. The law forbids sledding. The ban is to protect the Capitol grounds. But in legislation that cleared Congress in December, lawmakers instructed the cops to chill out.

In prior years, Capitol police officers reluctantly enforced the ban. Last year people organized a "sled-in."  It had the full support of Washington's nonvoting delegate, Democrat Eleanor Holmes Norton. A number of media covered the story. The police stood aside, avoiding the embarrassment and media coverage that would have come from breaking up the fun.

Enter the powerful House Appropriations Committee. Its chairman has an office that overlooks a prime sledding spot. The panel added language to a government funding bill that instructed the Capitol Police to "forbear enforcement" of the ban "when encountering snow sledders on the grounds."

The police were still there. But this time, they watched to make sure the kids were having a safe time of it.

I think it's cool that they allowed kids and families to come and sled, instead of keeping it locked away. More places should be this way

Capital hill is good for sledding for two reasons. One reason is that since there is a blizzard, there is a lot of snow making it ideal to go sledding. One quote that led me to believe this is, "...With a major blizzard hit in Washington ..." Another reason is that , at least for now, police are no longer enforcing the no sledding band. We know this because the artical states, "...Capital police said January 21 that they would no longer be enforcing the no sledding ban."

I think that sledding on capital hill would be so much fun. The blizzard would allow so much snowing making sledding more fast and fun. Also, now that the police are no longer enforcing the no sledding ban it will also be legal.

and our capital Washington DC it is for bidden for kids to be sledding on Capitol Hill until now there's been a new role that kids are allowed to kick sled on Capitol Hill as long as they're safe usually cops out there make sure that they stay off but the only thing that the cops will be doing now during this blizzard is making sure that they're having fun and being safe I chose this article because I enjoy sledding and I think every kid in a blizzard should be able to do it

With a big snowstorm hitting Washington D.C., Capital Hill is good for sledding. The reporter says that with a, "major blizzard hitting Washington, the U.S. Capitol Police said Jan. 21 that they wouldn't enforce a sledding ban." (paragraph 2). With a lot of snow comes kids wanting to sled. The capital banned sledding on Capital Hill last year to protect the grounds, but they lifted the ban on January 12. The hill, covered in white snow and in a police protected area, is now open for sledding for kids all ages. I thought this article was interesting and found Congress banning sledding on Capital Hill surprising.

WOW! It must of been nice of them to let people sled down that hill. But also people are enjoying themselves. But it is also nice that they are protecting the children. I wish that I could sled there. Maybe one day I will go sledding.

The congress might have wanted to make childrens to become happy by sledding down capitol hill people might have been waiting for the time that they will be able to be sledding on capitol hill. The people might have wanted to be waiting for things to be happening on capitol hill which the people might have been more happy than ever before the law didn't ban the people to be sledding on capitol hill. People might have been waiting for a long time until the law had changed since the time that they can't be able to be having fun sledding on capitol hill. Congress might have wanted to make people have fun on capitol hill since a lot of people had been waiting for the day to be sledding, the congress might have wanted to get people to be having fun.
Critical Thinking Question: What makes Capitol Hill good for sledding?
Answer: Capitol Hill might have been the best hills from all of the hills in Washington because people might have liked to be sledding on Capitol Hill because it has the best hill to be sledding on.

The thing that makes Capitol Hill a great place for leading is that a blizzard hit Washington. This year the police allowed it but in poor years the cops did not allow it. I thought this article was interesting because It would be a great trip to be able to sled on government property.
