Today's cheerleading includes pyramids, tosses, and tumbling. It could be classified as a high school sport in New York under a measure recommended by state education officials. The initiative would require coaches to be properly trained. Schools would be requried to follow common safety standards.

The Board of Regents is expected to vote on the proposal Tuesday. The measure has already received unanimous approval by a Regents committee.

New York has been considering classifying cheerleading as an interscholastic sport since 2009. State officials say 34 states and the District of Columbia currently do so.

"This is a great step for the progress of cheerleading. Tomorrow's vote by the Board of Regents could be historical," said Robert Zayas. He is the president of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. It would implement coaching and safety standards.

Right now, there are no limits on the length of seasons, time between contests or required practice days.

"The athleticism of competitive cheerleading requires that coaches are properly trained in stunt spotting and understanding the fundamentals of conditioning," the state Education Department's proposal to the Regents said.

If approved, the recommendation would take effect with the 2014-15 winter season.

Critical thinking challenge: Why is it important for schools to follow common safety standards?

It's no suprise that I think that cheerleading is a sport like c'mon now. But in cheerleading you do have to be very safe and your coach needs to know what he or she is doing. And competitive cheerleading is awesome.

I think cheer leading should be considered as a sport because you are still moving and being active as a team. It also has some dancing involved.

In response to "Is Cheerleading a sport,? Maybe in New York!," I agree that cheerleading should become a school sport. One reason I agree is that more injuries happen cheerleading than in every other sport. You might say to prevent the injuries all you need is a first aid kit, but a trained coach can make sure the first aid kit isn't needed. Another reason is that there are cheerleading competitions! It says in the article that city council is voting on if cheerleading is considered a sport so they must agree! You may say that cheerleading shouldn't considered a sport because they have no one to cheer for, but they cheer for themselves instead of a sports team. A third reason is that cheerleaders are very athletic, and they deserve to be considered sports players. You might argue that all cheerleaders have to do is make hand gestures, yell, and look pretty, but in competitive cheerleading the cheerleaders have to flip, jump, and lift each other up. Even though non-competive cheerleading may not be as dangerous, I think it's still dangerous and should be considered a sport.

Its important for them to follow safety standards , because they don't want nobody to get hurt and get sued to the school. That would be bad for the school and parents would take their kids out and there would be no school.
