An Arkansas veterinarian has kept a dog from going out with a bang after the animal ate 23 live rifle rounds.

Benno is a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois. He had surgery to remove the .308 caliber ammunition from his stomach, The Baxter Bulletin newspaper reported.

Owner Larry Brassfield said Benno has eaten socks, magnets and marbles. He didn't expect the animal would bother a bag of bullets left by a bed. Brassfield and his wife realized Benno needed medical attention after the pet vomited up four rounds.

Veterinarian Sarah Sexton at All Creatures Animal Hospital in Mountain Home removed 17 rounds from Benno's stomach. She left two in his esophagus, which the dog was allowed to discharge on his own.

"This is something they certainly did not cover in school," Sexton said. "I've had dogs eat things before, mostly stuffed toys. Once I had one swallow a hearing aid. But I think this takes the cake."

Brassfield said he won't leave ammo lying around anymore. But he isn't optimistic that Benno will stick to dog food.

"You can baby-proof a house," Brassfield said. "But I don't think it's possible to Benno-proof a house. Lord knows, we've tried and failed."

Critical thinking challenge: Why wasn't this procedure covered in Sarah Sextons school?

I think is extremely interesting because it isn't usual for dogs to be eating bullets. It is extremely out of the ordinary, and they shouldn't be attracted to such objects. Dogs can be seriously injured if they continue to eat these things.

This is really scary, i would be so upset and afraid if I found out that my dog ate ammo! I can't imagine how the ammo looked appetizing to the dog at all. But the owners must be really strong and brave to have a sense of humor about the whole thing. I thought it was funny how his owner mentioned that you can baby proof a house but you can never Benno proof a house.

That's crazy! I can't believe a dog ate 23 bullets! He also ate many other things other than dog food. Thank god they got the bullets out.

I think it is so funny how this dog managed to eat 23 live rifles! He could have gotten really sick or maybe even exploded! This shows that dogs will eat anything they can manage to put in their mouth, I hope he has a safe recovery!

It's good that the owners of the dog had the right sense to go to the vet right after Benno vomited. But I'm not exactly sure why there was a box of bullets next to a bed and how they were in reach of the young 4-year-old dog Benno.

Although my does not eat anything that requires medical attention, i know that a lot of dogs do. Having a bag of ammunition in a dogs reach is not wise. Dogs are curious, so keep them safe. Theyre family too.

It is very strange that a dog would be able to eat ammo with out dying, especially 23 of them. The dog owners were very lucky as well as the dog! The fact that the owner had ammos lying around is very concerning too

I know that many dogs go for things they shouldn't eat, so I'm glad that Benno got the medical attention he needed before he got really hurt. It must have been scary to realize your dog just ate something dangerous. Almost all dogs are curious, so its important to know what they are getting into.

Oh my gosh! I can't believe that their dog ate bullets! I wonder if he was in any pain? I looked up what a live rifle round was and it looks very painful! How did Benno survive the surgery, they must of had a great vet!

A dog named bueno ate 17 bullets. He had to get the bullets removed by surgery. The doctor had never seen anything like this. The owner left the bullets by his bed, and the dog ate them. The dog also will eat things around the house. The owner says that even baby proofing wouldn't stop his dog. I am surprised at the dog survived. If I aborts I would probably die.
