Israeli archaeologists have unearthed a 7,000-year-old settlement in northern Jerusalem. They are describing it as the oldest discovery of its kind in the area.
Israel's Antiquities Authority said the excavation exposed two houses with well-preserved remains and floors containing pottery vessels, flint tools and a basalt bowl.
Ronit Lupu is the authority's director of excavations. She said the items are representative of the early Chalcolithic period, beginning around 5,000 B.C. Similar developments have been found elsewhere in present-day Israel. But they have not been found in Jerusalem.
"This is the first time we found architecture of this kind in Jerusalem itself," she said. "We are talking about an established society. Very well organized, with settlement, with cemeteries."
During the Chalcolithic period, people began to use tools made from copper. They continued to use stone tools as well.
The site was discovered while authorities were doing roadwork in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Shuafat.
It remains unclear how large the development was. The excavation covered an area of about 500 square feet. There were no immediate plans to expand the work, Lupu said.

Humans used stone tools because they did not know what metal was and did not know how to make metal. In the article it states that the tools and supplies they found were around the time "5,000 B.C." As copper was just starting to be used which would which would mean that the bronze age would start in about 2,000 years later. As iron, a very commonly used metal, would be in the iron age. This correlates to the fact that they did not have any idea what metal was or how to smelt the metal.

Opinion: I thought this article was cool because it stated that a new civilization was just found that would predate the earliest civilization that was found in that area.

Humans used stone tools before metal ones because back then it was easier to make tools out of stone than metal. It was a long time ago when stone tools were switched out for metal ones, it was the, "early Chalcolithic period, beginning around 5,000 B.C." (paragraph 3). Tools were easier to make out of stone than metal because stone was much more abundant than metals. Plus, stone was much more easy to get than metals; you had to look and dig deep to find metals. Lastly, humans a long time ago were not smart enough to know that stone tools were better than metal tools. Their brains were not as developed as our brains today. That is why stone tools were made before metal ones. I thought this article was moderately interesting and found a city being found in Jerusalem surprising.

Humans did not have technology to made metal tools. When they started making tools they just put a rock on a stick and hit it with another rock. It was only later when they where able to melt metal and shape it in to many forms.

Stone tools is made out of stone which is from Rome. We use metal tools to go mines and find some good stuff like diamonds or something good that make you rich. Long time ago, the people in Rome use stones to make tools. People like blacksmith make tools like sword.

The archaeologists had been able to find an ancient 7,000 year old settlement where there had been ancient things that they can be able to excavate at the 7,000 year old settlement that is east of a town in Jerusalem. The 7,000 year old settlement had been able to get archaeologists to excavate ancient relics that they can be able to find at the old settlement that they had found. The 7,000 year old settlement had been able to get archaeologists to be excavating the site in search of finding ancient things that had been left behind by people who had owned the old settlement. People might have wanted to get find ancient things that had been left behind by people from the old settlement that people once lived in a long time ago.
Critical Thinking Question: Why did humans use stone tools before before tools made from metal?
Answer: Because metal wasn't there when people lived when they created tools.

Humans used stone tool before metal because of the lack of cutting materials needed to cut through metal and they only had iffy stone instead of steel and diamond. To ad their stone tools did just fine for what they needed it to do.
This article was interesting to me because i never knew that people 7 thousand years ago had stone houses and stone tools.

Well,my he 7,000 year old settlement wasn't found in Israel, I was found in Palestine. Which is the original name for the country. But it's still cool how they found it. It seems fun to be an archeologist. Humans used stone tools because they couldn't find metal and didn't know where to look for it.

I thought that this writing was very informational and well written. It was also very interesting. I did not know that they used tool back then. I did not know that you had to make your own type of tool to dig or to cut down trees with. And that they also could not use metal to make a tool to use. Probably because it wasn't around back then.
