Israel's antiquities authority has uncovered a 1,700-year-old mosaic floor.  Archaeologists found it last year.  It was found while a visitors' center was being built to display another mosaic.  The first one was discovered two decades earlier at the same location.

The authority said the Roman-era mosaic measures 36 feet by 42 feet. It paved the courtyard of a villa in a wealthy neighborhood.  It stood during the Roman and Byzantine eras. The scenes include hunting animals, fish, vases and birds.

"The quality of the images portrayed in the mosaic indicates a highly developed artistic ability," said Amir Gorzalczany. He directed the excavation.

The new mosaic was found just a few yards from the first one.  Today, the location is in the central Israeli city of Lod.

The authority said the mosaic discovered in the 1990s covered the villa's living room.  The newly discovered one was in its courtyard.

The original mosaic has been shown at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. It has also been at the Louvre in Paris and the Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. It currently can be seen at the Cini Gallery in Venice, Italy.  It is expected to return to Lod after the visitors' center is complete.

The mosaic was found in an affluent neighborhood because to create a mosaic during the Roman times was very, very expensive to have and it is also expensive today. This making sense to the mosaic being found in a richer neighborhood because poorer people wouldn't have been able to afford this kind of grand art.

The mosaic was found in an affluent neighborhood because it shows great artistic detail, and it was a paved villa in a wealthy neighborhood. The mosaic was found in an affluent neighborhood because it show great artistic detail. "'The quality of the images portrayed in the mosaic indicates a highly developed artistic ability,' said Amir Gorzalczany." This piece of evidence means that the mosaic must have cost a lot to make and hire the artists that created it. The mosaic was found in a wealthy neighborhood because it was a paved villa in a wealthy neighborhood. " It paved the courtyard of a villa in a wealthy neighborhood." This quote speaks for itself by saying the mosaic was courtyard which means that it had to have cost a lot when it was in a affluent neighborhood.

Opinion: I think this article was kind of boring because it did not show anything of interest to me. Also it was kind of short which means it usually is not very good.

I think the person who found it did not know what it was.

The mosaic was found in an affluent neighborhood because the article states "The authority said the mosaic discovered in the 1990s covered the villa's living room. The newly discovered one was in its courtyard." I found this article interesting because something from the past had been discovered and it gives us an opening into their life. I hope they find more of these beautiful mosaics.

Why was the mosaic found in an affluent neighborhood? In the story they say that whoever painted this had great ability. I think if you have great ability maybe you had lessons. It was a wealthy neighborhood so you could pay for lessons, and I believe that's why it was painted in a wealthy town.

The mosaic was found in an affluent neighborhood because affluent means wealthy and that neighborhood would have to be wealthy to afford a piece like that. The piece is 1,700 years old and 36 by 42 feet. For my understanding that's kind of big. Also there is so much detail in the mosaic that it had to be expensive. There were vases, hunting animals, birds, and fish. So the mosaic is 1,700 years old, 36 by 42 feet, and very detailed so it would have had to be found in an affluent neighborhood because it would have costed thousands of dollars. So that is the reason it was found in an affluent neighborhood.

The mosaic was found in an affluent neighborhood because from the picture the piece looked very beautyful. Someone with great money probably built it. It was also a few yards away from the other mosaic piece found centuries ago. The mosaic was very pretty and had a lot of pictures of animals and vases. It is probably worth lots of money.

The mosaic was found in a affluent neighborhood because it was the courtyard of an old villa in Rome. It could be found in an affluent neighborhood because it is valuable. Great artist might have painted it in that affluent spot so he would get a lot if money for doing it.
