Chicago's hippest hot dog stand helped turn the lowly sausage into a culinary superstar. Customers could order hot dogs stuffed with exotic ingredients. Like rattlesnake.

So when the owner announced the gourmet shop was closing, everyone expected hot dog fans to line up for one last taste.

But no one could have predicted what happened. Customers brought lawn chairs, card tables and poker chips to help pass the wait of up to eight hours. A spot in line popped up on Craigslist for $300.

As Hot Doug's prepares to close Friday, the line outside Doug Sohn's "sausage superstore" has become as big a sensation as the stand itself.

Christopher Sanders and his buddy David Kudla became Wednesday's first customers at 12:45 a.m., unfolding lawn chairs to wait for the doors to open at 10:30 a.m.

Sanders, 29, had never been to Doug's before put off, by all things, by the sight of constant but shorter lines.

"I've driven past it, seen the lines and said, 'I'm not waiting that long, it's crazy.'" But, he said, "I will never get a chance to do it ever again."

Sergio Deleon, who arrived at 3 a.m., knew that if he was not in his college classroom by 11, it could cost him a full grade in class.

"Gonna be worth it," said the 24-year-old Deleon, though he had a plan for salvaging an A, by purchasing a hot dog for the professor.

Bartender Dani Ploszaj thought it nice to learn the names of the other people in line, all of them.

"I was like, 'Hey, what's your name, what's your name?'" she said, pointing to the 48th, 49th and 50th people in line Michelle, Annie and Patrick.

"Now they're all my friends."

Critical thinking challenge: Hot dogs are an All-American food. How does adding exotic ingredients reflect the culture of the U.S.?

I probably wouldn't have had the patience or energy to wait in a line like that all night. It is really touching to see people come over for one last taste of a very special hot dog. I think that Hot Doug's should have stayed open if they had this big of an outcome.

I think its not a good idea to add more ingrediants to a hatdog because first its not healthy, second it adds more fat. So I would not wait in line for a hot dog.

it reflects the culture of the US because it can now be made for everybody for every culture changing the ingredients is a good think for every culture

I think its ridiculous to wait in a hot dog line for that long.I would just go somewhere else and buy it. I wouldnt eat a hot dog with rattlesnake in it if it was free.

I think that waiting in line for even over an hour for a hot dog is just a crazy thing to do. But I understand that if one of the coolest hot dogs stands around that put exotic food inside of the hot dog was closing, people will wan tot go and savor the last one.

I think its pretty cool to have that long of a line just for a hot dog! If I were one of those people, I probably wouldn't have waited that long just for a hot dog that has different ingredients in the hot dog. Rattlesnake? Ew, I think ill pass on that!

I would never do that! Those are some very crazy people. Standing in a line for that long, just for a hot dog? No.

I would not have the patience to wait that long. I don't know how people can wait for that long for just a hot dog unless it really good. But i'm asking myself why would you wait for that long

There is no way in the world that I would wait in line that big just to get a hot dog. Especially if I know that if i don't get to school on time that I will fail the grade!

I think its just crazy to wait in a line that long but if those hot dogs are that good you can count on me for waiting in that line to try one of those. also i think its great someone is making a plain hotdog so great with some others flavors.
