A Maine lobsterman says he and his 14-year-old daughter caught a one-in-two-million crustacean: a blue lobster.

WCSH-TV reports Jay LaPlante of the Miss Meghan Lobster Catch company caught the creature in Scarborough on Saturday morning. LaPlante and daughter Meghan were hauling traps when she discovered the bright blue critter.

The story has a happy ending for the lobster. Meghan says she is naming it Skyler and will donate it to the Maine State Aquarium. The aquarium says it has three other blue lobsters and an orange one.

While typical lobsters are often a brown or greenish color, others can be bright red (uncooked), calico, multi-colored, orange and even albino, which is likely the rarest of all lobster shades.

"They're rare, but we still see them every summer," University of Maine Lobster Institute Executive Director Robert C. Bayer told Michael Kuhne of AccuWeather.com. "We see around three to four a year."

Bayer said there is still much unknown about the number of lobsters, but according to some estimates, only one out of two million lobsters is blue.

Critical thinking challenge: Why did Meghan decide to donate the lobster instead of cooking it, eating it or selling it?

A blue lobster is certainly strange, and pretty rare. It was found by marine lobster man Laplante and his daughter. Right after they found it, they donated it to an aquarium. This is a good way to learn more about the species. However, they should be left in the wild. is not good to put them all in captivity.

This article is quite interesting. I actually didn't know lobsters could be blue, or anything besides red actually. I do wish they would explain if its a genetic deformity or not though. Also to read that blue is not the rarest color of lobster, and that they can see around three to four a year, is shocking. And to learn that only one in two million lobsters are blue is amazing.

There could be many reasons for the lobster to be blue. One is that a ship carrying dye could have split some into the ocean. Another possibility is that the lobster could have been affected be either the water it lived in or the organisms it ate. Also someone could have left a blue item on a beach and the lobster crawled into it, the heat would slowly melt the object and would dye the lobster blue bit by bit. It could however just be a genetics thing in the lobster to keep it hidden in the blue waters.

A blue lobster strange I only thought they were red. This article is very fascinating because who knew that there were different kinds of lobsters. I would honestly eat it because it would be a new taste of flavor. There not that rare cause if they find four a year then they could find more. The government would make money if they started to sell them in stores.

I think Meghan decided to donate the lobster because they're rare. I also think she donated it to the Maine State Aquarium because they have 3 other blue lobsters, which makes them safe to be with each other. It is very rare to find a blue lobster, which is why they may be keeping them safe, also for sight seeing at the Maine State Aquarium.

I feel that this article is a waste of energy. It does not provide enough energy. It is also off of topic. I disagree with this information.

Woah! That is awesome, if I had a blue lobster I would name it Blueberry. I can only imagine walking along the beach and seeing a blue lobster crawl up out of the water.
