A favorite and locally famous cafeteria treat is off the menu forever in one northeast Ohio school system because of new federal nutritional guidelines.

The government's edict to provide healthier foods and cut fats and cholesterol will put an end to the sale of the traditional Elyria pink cookie. It's a buttery sweet treat with pink icing that has been a favorite of city school kids for four decades.

The cookie was developed by a former district food services director who used her grandmother's recipe. The cookie had gained a cult following and was once named the "Best Cafeteria Cookie" by Cleveland magazine, according to The (Elyria) Chronicle-Telegram.

Scott Teaman, food services director with Sodexo Inc., the district's contracted food provider, said the federal guidelines for school snacks are strict. The pink cookie just can't make the cut, he said.

"We could modify the recipe by changing the size, using whole-grain flour or putting on less icing. But in doing that you are not making the same cookies," Teaman said. "There is only one way to do the pink cookie. And to do it any other way would not do it justice."

The pink cookies will not disappear completely. Teaman said district bakers will fire up the ovens for special orders at $5 a dozen. Orders will be taken during the week and available for pickup on Fridays.

The district west of Cleveland, like school districts around the county, is changing up cafeteria menus. the menus will include more fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. In addition, there will be fewer calories, less fat and less cholesterol.

Critical thinking challenge: Give at least two reasons why the cookie had been a favorite

i dont think this is right. kids need to be able to pick what they want to eat like in real life. if they want to pick something unhealthy well they should because when they get to be an adult they make thier own choices.

The loved pink cookie is banned for cafeteria. The Ohio school system banned this cookie for not being healthy enough to serve to the students. It can still be bought outside of school but isn't an option to buy fro a lunch great anymore. They thought they could modify the cookie with more healthy ingredients like whole grain flour and less icing. The cookie wouldn't be the same and there is no use to change the Ohio favorite. These cookies are super yummy and most kids love them. It is important to be healthy but you can have some treats too. Mabey instead of cookies everyday or none at all the Ohio school could have "cookie days" where you get the cookie. It's not everyday but it's not never.

They have them in the store and sell them, and it is like the best cookie they have in the lunch room. Every kid loves sweet cookies and just the color pink is like the best.

Some schools are considering removing cookies from the available menu. Some people get excited for lunch specificall fro the sweet treat/dessert like a cookie. people don't ruin it for them.

This cookie has banned for reasons that students were not paying attention to . This cookies are really tasteful an they smell good to children who like them . Most kids are probably mad that cookies are banned but they need to realize that its good for there health. Me personally love the cookies but they are not good for you

The cookie had been a favorite because it's unhealthy, which makes it addicting to eat and the icing. This made the cookie banned from school's cafeterias because it's "junk food" with bad cholesterol and nutrition.

Cookies are a favorite food. The text states that the cookie is "a buttery sweet treat with pink icing that has been a favorite of city school kids for four decades." The text also states "We could modify the recipe by changing the size, using whole-grain flour or putting on less icing. But in doing that you are not making the same cookies". The evidence from the text explains why it is a favorite food.
