A gourd weighing 2,058 pounds took first prize and set a tournament record at a pumpkin contest in Northern California.

John Hawkley, 56, grew the winning pumpkin and entered it at the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-off in California's Napa Valley, an area famous for its wine grapes.

Hawkley "squashed" his competition, beating the runner-up by more than 300 pounds.

Hawkley, a production manager for a newspaper, credited his success at least in part to warm weather. He ended up with a total of six pumpkins on a 4,500-square-foot patch of land in his front yard. One of the other pumpkins also weighed more than 2,000 pounds.

"My wife said this is as much pumpkin patch area as I'm going to get," he said.

Hawkley said he will use the $13,000 in prize money to make repairs on his home, which was damaged during an earthquake in the Napa area in August.

All 30 pumpkins weighed at this year's tournament were from California, according to contest spokesman Tim Beeman. The contest, held in in Half Moon Bay south of San Francisco, normally gets growers from Oregon and Washington as well.

Last year's winning pumpkin was also from the Napa Valley and came in at 1,985 pounds.

Critical thinking challenge: Safeway is a supermarket chain. Why would it sponsor this contest? (Hint: have you heard of Safeway before?)

Growing that big of a pumpkin seems like hard work. i think Safeway sponsors them because they are a food market and sell pumpkins during October.

Safeway might have sponsored this contest to get people to know who they are because when you have a big winner, it spreads and people will know about the person as well as the contest and people will try and join and win, and the supermarket chain gets popularity.

No I haven't heard of Safeway before but they probably didn't sponsor this contest because it was about having large pumpkins and how much it weighed and the pumpkins are dirty and the people who were bin the contest would want to take home their pumpkin

I guess that this is pretty neat to read about, but I honestly don't understand the big deal over trying to grow this pumpkin. I'm guessing it took a lot of time and care to grow this so why waste that time on just a pumpkin?

It' crazy that pumpkins can grow to be that big! I can't even how much a 500 pounds pumpkin would be let alone a 2,000 pound one. I would if the drastic pumpkin growth has something to do with the Napa Valley area since last year's winner was also from Napa Valley, CA.

I think it is cool to grow a pumpkin that weighs as much as a car. I never seen a pumpkin that weighs as much as a car. I'm thinking it is bigger than a car.

It would sponsor the contest because, for the people that have not heard of it before can finally go there and recognize what its worthy cause is.

It so amazing that it weighs more than a car. I don't wanna be traffic if that thing is just rolling down the highway. I'm surprised that Hawkley did't get more than 13K. When I saw the pumpkin I thought $100,000 at least but I guess I was wrong.
