A huge grin appears on the face of glass artist Jonathan Michael Davis as he burns hole after hole through spheres of glass, making a popping sound.

Davis, a glassblower by trade, uses a sabre of flame made of liquid oxygen and propane to manipulate glass into elaborate art and sculptures at his studio in rural Chatham County near Pittsboro, North Carolina. The temperature from the torch in Davis' studio rises along with the anticipation of a large glass sculpture in the making.

On a recent day, Davis was preparing a large piece for the Sculpture in the Garden Exhibition at the North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill. His work, along with the work of other sculptors across the state, are integrated into the garden's outdoors environment.

"I've never done anything this big or expensive and time consuming before," Davis says of his new sculpture. "I wanted to kind of push myself, at least in my mind. If I put forth as much effort as I possibly can, that's going to be received in some way."

Critical thinking challenge: Why is Michael Davis motivated to push himself?

liquid oxygen and propane to manipulate glass into elaborate art can make new opportunities for artists and enthusiasts alike it can be considered graffiti to some but takes a lot more effort when it comes to this new type of art.

Being a glassblower is a trade that requires skillful and still hands. It is also an expensive trade. The items required are easy to find but mistakes can happen. It is when they do that it becomes much more difficult. A single crack can make or break a sculpture.

I feel Michael is so motivated to do such great big projects like this because he really enjoys what he does and he likes the challenge and push to make bigger and better things. His art work is so extravagant I personally think all of it is so amazing. Not very many people can do what he does and the fact he loves what he does makes him just that much better at it.

A artist is making a piece of glass into art. A good thing is that he is being unique by making a glass sculpture. To me, a bad thing would be if the temperature of the heat is to hot and ruins the glass. I still think that this is very interesting.

Michael Davis is motivated to push himself because, what ever you give to the world you shall get in return.I think Michael should keep on pushing himself until he gets what he wants.

Michael Davis is motivated to push himself. I think Michael should keep on pushing himself until he gets what he wants. I think glassblowing an amazing thing. I've actually seen it done in person when i was on my trip. Glassblowing should be spread worldwide and it should be more popular.

I think that's pretty cool that art can be more than pencil and paper and paint. Its cool that you can make anything out of art.

Michael Davis says that he wanted to push himself because he never did anything this big and time consuming. He wanted to make it great and make it count. He said his sculpture will come out better if its done well.

As Michael Davis said in the article, "I wanted to kind of push myself, at least in my mind. If I put forth as much effort as I possibly can, that's going to be received in some way". I think he wants people to see what he can do and to have the motivation to do something that you like to do and make it bigger.
