The Port of Los Angeles is welcoming the world's biggest bath toy, a 60-foot-tall rubber duck, which sailed into port Wednesday to kick off the Tall Ships Festival LA and was to remain in the harbor through Sunday.

Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman first showed off his duck in 2007 and since then, versions of it have been seen worldwide. Hofman's creation was part of a tour named "Spreading joy around the world," where the artist wanted those who see the giant duck to recall their childhood memories.

The giant duck is made of PVC and has more than 200 pieces. The staff for the duck can go inside through an opening in the back and an electric fan is inside so the duck can be inflated.

The giant duck has traveled the world, including the Netherlands, England, Australia, Brazil and China. The first American city it visited was Pittsburgh and next was Norfolk, Va.

Hofman has built a new duck for most locations and the artist's website says little about his intent but it says the duck knows no borders, does not discriminate and has no political allegiance. "The friendly, floating Rubber Duck has healing properties: it can relieve mondial tensions as well as define them," the website claims.

Critical thinking challenge: Can a giant, inflatable yellow duck be art? And if it is art, what does it mean?

I recon its so difficult to classify what is art or not, because the vision of art is so subjective and it depends of the different points of view we have. For example, some people could find art in some movies, books, pieces of clothes or music. This kind intervention (the really big yellow duck) is pretty fun and it could be art too, but if we make a comparison between a fascinating Dalis piece of art and this rubber yellow duck, we know which is gonna be the winner.

This giant rubber duck is an urban intervention that can be easily considered art. Today's world knows more types of art than the world from yesteryear. Today, art can be not only poetry, music, sculpture and paintings, but other manifestations of the human soul do constitute art too. People are more broad-minded than before and that means that art has evolved along with humanity. So yes, I regard urban interventions such as this as art.

In this particular case, the inflatable yellow duck meant a lot of hard work from the artist, and was intended to wake up emotions in viewers, people just need to be more in touch with their own emotions, that's all. If you don't have high-mindedness to appreciate art, and on the contrary, you see everything the way a child see things, of course you will laugh at nudity for example, or more unconventional pieces of art.

Pretty cool to see a giant duck on display for people to recall their childhood memories. Even though i disagree with this being categorized as art and more like a stunt or prank, there are ways this is creative because it provokes a reaction and the artist did intend for the duck to be viewed as art.

I would love to see this giant inflatable duck!
I would consider this art. He had to make plans. He had a lot of material to make this. Someone with no idea about art couldn't make this giant duck.

I think that a giant rubber duck is awesome it would be cool if it came to San Diego, CA. In my opinion, the giant rubber duck is like a giant parade with one float it is also cool that it visits many different countries.

This story was compelling, and exquisite. I did some research on the rubber duck and found out that it holds the world record for the most monumental rubber duck in the world. If you take a saunter along the Los Angeles waterfront, you might be just lucky to find what they call "Just Ducky"! Is this art or just a big yellow outburst of child-like joy? Discover for yourself, in the bay as tall ships jamboree at the LA waterfront!
