A 3-year-old Great Dane was miserable when its owners took him to an emergency animal hospital.

X-rays showed a stomach full of "a large quantity of foreign material" and nearly two hours of surgery later, Dr. Ashley Magee had the answer: The dog had consumed 43 1/2 socks.

DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital spokeswoman Shawna Harch said it's perhaps the strangest case in the hospital's history. So strange that the hospital entered a contest sponsored by the vet magazine, Veterinary Practice News, and won a prize.

Fittingly enough, the contest is called "They Ate WHAT?"

The $1,500 first-place winner was a Plano, Texas, animal hospital that treated an exotic frog that ate more than 30 small ornamental rocks from its cage.

The Portland hospital's entry summary says the Great Dane went home a day after surgery.

Tom Hallman Jr. of described the Great Dane's symptoms this way: Imagine eating five large pizzas in one sitting.

During the surgery, Hallman reported that the vet must have thought she was working in a department store as she pulled out sock after sock after sock and in the end, Dr. Magee removed 43 1/2 socks. No one knows what happened to the other half sock.

The Portland hospital won $500 for second place in the contest and the money will help low-income people pay for vet bills.

Critical thinking challenge: What could have happened to the other half of sock?

I think this article was very interesting. Who would of thought that a dog could have over 40 socks stuffed in its stomach. It's very tragic to hear that a dog went to the hospital to have several socks removed from its stomach in order for the dog to survive. I learned that its possible for a dog to swallow a sock let alone over 40.

So, a dog ate forty three socks, and needed surgery to have them taken out. One good thing about this article is that the socks were removed. One bad thing about this is that he ate that many socks, without his owners noticing that there socks were missing. Something that interests me is the fact that no one noticed that all of their socks were missing.

Maybe the sock was fully digested by the dog. Or maybe he got so full he wasn't able to eat another sock. I wonder why the dog was eating so much.

This story was so unusual but yet it was very interesting to hear about. I honestly don't know how a dog ate 44 socks. It said 43 1/2 so the other half must of went somewhere. I find it very cool that the dog survived from eating 44 socks. How is that even possible for the dog to hold all of them? The first place winner, I don't know how that frog ate 30 unusual rocks either. The things animals do...

According to the passage the dog ate 43 1/2 socks. I believe that the other half of the sock was not eaten and the dog got sick,so he didn't eat the sock. I think that this is very interesting because my dog Sophie eats everything. I can't believe that all those socks could fit in a three year old puppy. I can imagine that because 5 large pizzas that would be a lot. In the end though I am happy that the dog is okay. Hopefully the Great Dane learned his lesson.

According to the text, the dog consumed 43 1/2 socks. That is incredible! For the contest, I can't believe he didn't win. .Although I kinda thought the contest was kinda stupid. I'm glad that the hospital got $500 for helping the dog.

I Believe the other sock might of got ripped in half and the remains he threw up. I feel so bad for this dog i wish he could of just been watched.

I think that it was not right to leave socks and clothes around dogs. Also how did the owners not notice that 43 socks went missing and that the dog was miserable. I think it was the owners fault that the dog ate all the socks and that it could have been avoided just by moving the socks and clothes away from the dog.

What could've happened to the other sock is that he only bit half of it or the sock split in two in his stomach and he discarded it when he went to the bathroom

What could have happened to the other sock is that the dog could have bit the other half off before consuming the rest. The sock could have been a half sock from the beginning. My reaction to this story is that , that dog is lucky that he lived because that was a lot of socks. The dog could have also maybe choked on a sock or got it stuck somewhere. If that ever happened to my dog i would be really worried that something would happen to him. I would feel really bad that something like that happened to him. I would think it would be my fault for leaving something out like that and i would keep everything out of my dogs sight except his toys.
