A blind dog who wandered away from her home during a deep freeze has been reunited with her owner.

The 11-year-old Labrador retriever named Madera ventured away from home in Ester, Alaska, on Feb. 6, when the temperature dipped to 40 degrees below zero.

Her owner, Ed Davis, said he didn't expect to find her alive.

"My best hope was to walk those trails and look for a track that might be hers," he said.

Davis expects he never would have found Madera if Constantine Khrulev hadnt been out on the trails last week, riding a fat bike and accompanied by his own dog, which was wearing a bell.

The bell-wearing dog made the difference, Davis said, when Madera, responding to the bell, let out a whine as the dog ran by. Khrulev went into the woods and found her under a tree, more than 100 yards from the trail and about half a mile from Davis house.

She was not going to be found accidentally, Davis said.

Davis said his dog lost 14 pounds but was, overall, healthy.

The man who rescued her, Constantine Khrulev, asked for the $100 reward money to go to the Fairbanks Animal Shelter Fund, and Davis was so impressed by the gesture that he increased the donation to $250.

Madera is completely blind because of an autoimmune disease.

This wasn't the only tale of a lost, blind dog to end happily in Fairbanks in recent years. A blind 8-year-old dog named Abby walked more than 10 miles in 2012 from her home in the Two River area before she was rescued.

Critical thinking challenge: This story had a happy ending. Give two reasons why the happy ending was unlikely.

It's a miracle that Madera was found alive. Since she's blind and it was extremely cold, the chances of finding her alive were so slim.I'm glad that her owner has her back.

This article was a very tough one to read because to know that a dog was lost in this cold weather and not able to be in a house thats all nice and warm. Im glad they found this dog because if they werent able to find this dog then it couldve of got very hurt with this cold weather or even wonder off like that.

I like this article. Constantine was awesome when he gave the money to the F.A.S.F. That's a really good person because he doesn't only care about himself.

The dog was able to hear the other dog's bell because it was blind which improved the blind dog's hearing.

The story is mainly about a dog that was blind and wandered off because it couldn't see where it went. They found the dog so that's the good part. Plus, the dog surprisingly walked 10 miles, and it couldn't see, but they found the dog and that's all that matters.

This article was about an eleven year blind old lab named Madera. Madera ventured away from her home on February 6th and it was 40 degrees below zero at the time. Her owner Ed Davis did not expect to find her alive. Constatine Khrulev found her when he was riding a fat bike with his dog who was wearing a bell. This bell saved Madera's life because when she heard it she started barking which helped her get found. I think that it is so great that Madera was found. I don't know what I would do if I lost my dog in those conditions.

I like this story because it has a happy ending. I also like how the owner was determined to find his dog dead or alive.

This story is actually real inspiring. It just goes to show that even though something is unlikely, if you never give it, it can happen.

I like this story not only because it was good but instead of just giving up he looked for him no matter what. Some people would not have done that.
