Why do we get goosebumps? (Thinkstock)
Why do we get goosebumps?

You asked us, "Why do we get goosebumps?"

Goosebumps are actually a useless holdover. They are from our hairier days.

We get them in reaction to the cold. We could also get them from to fear or any other strong emotion.

Here is what happens. Say we walk into a freezer. Or suddenly find ourselves face-to-face with a grizzly. The part of our brain called the hypothalamus kicks in.

It signals our body to make adrenaline. That causes muscles at the base of our hairs to contract. Then they stand on end.

We are not exactly covered in a dense coat of hair these days. Not most of us at least. So all we see are raised bumps.

It was different back in the good old days. Those raised hairs allowed us to trap a layer of air. The air protected us from the cold.
The hair-raising reaction also had another benefit. It made us look bigger to predators. That gave us a little time to either run or 'bring it.'
Well, I will be a monkey's uncle! Er, distant relative. Whatever.

A long time ago, a layer of air would get caught in between a persons hair and leg and protect them from the cold. But now, not lots of us are covered completely in hair. What it's saying is when you are you covered hair, that makes us look bigger to predators. So they think we are there prey.
