What is wind? Palm trees blowing during a storm. (Thinkstock)
What is wind?
Lexile

You asked us a question. What exactly is wind? And how does it get blown around?

Wind is a major player here on Earth. It sculpts landscapes. It brings rain and uproots trees along with lives.

So what's behind this invisible force that can tickle a cheek one second, and topple a building the next?

Good question. Wind is just air moving around. And air is just a bunch of dancing molecules. Gravity pulls down on the molecules. The closer they get to the Earth's surface, the more tightly packed they become.

Air that's under high pressure like that naturally flows to areas of low pressure. The bigger the difference in pressure, the faster the air flows. And that, my fellow geeks, is wind.

But what causes one area to be higher pressure than another? The sun. It heats the Earth's surface unevenly. That creates areas with warmer air. The warmer air rises, and then the cooler air rushes in.

All of these air movements happen at both local and global scales. Of course, it's all a lot more complicated than all of this. That makes wind and weather a little bit unpredictable.

Which is why I never leave home without my trusty cape.

Wind can turn into tornadoes and they could uproot a tree and it could fall on a house.

So if it's really windy wont wont the molecules be deadly because it says that it could topple a bulding?

I never knew that air was just dancing molecules.

Wind can uproot a tree and someone's life because the air pressure and speed can be so high that it can uproot a civilian's life and a tree. In paragraph five it says" Air that's under high pressure like that naturally flows to areas of low pressure. The bigger the difference in pressure, the faster the air flows. And that, my fellow geeks, is wind."

This article is a good article if you have to study about wind in science. It tells you about fun facts about wind, and how wind forms. If you are a scientist reading about wind, I truly recommend this article.
