You asked us a question.

"What happens when you get a concussion?"

Our brains are the consistency of Jell-O. Luckily they are covered in bone. They are wrapped in membranes. And they are floating in fluid.

They are also one of the best-protected organs in our body. Until we get hit on the head. Or tossed around.

Then those delicate brains can end up bumping and twisting around in our skulls.

One result from that might be a concussion. It is a traumatic injury. It can change the way our brains work. That is at least briefly.

That is because nerve cells can get stretched. That affects their ability to send and get messages to and from the rest of the body.

And those protective membranes surrounding our brains? Well, they can tear. That allows toxic materials to leak into brain tissue. It causes cell death.

The brain is like any other bruised flesh. It might swell during a concussion.

It does not have a whole lot of room to expand. So it can end up pressing against the skull. That can cause even more damage.

Getting a lot of concussions can add up over time. They lead to problems with memory loss. They can also lead to problems with depression and even dementia.

So what is the lesson today? Be careful with your Jell-O brain.

Mmmm ... Brains! Brains!

Bruised flesh swells because if you get a concussion, your brain might start to get bigger and bigger. When it does that, your flesh gets bruised and starts to swell. Bruised flesh swells because (since your brain got bigger), it hits your skull and can cause lots of damage to your brain.
