The Los Angeles Zoo has received a real treat for Halloween. Their first baby hippopotamus in 26 years was born.

The zoo says the baby was born Friday, Oct. 31. It was somewhat of a surprise. Staffers had noticed the mother hippo gaining weight. That made them suspect she was pregnant.

Vets haven't determined the sex of the new hippo. They say the baby appears to be doing well. It is bonding with mom.

The mother, 10-year-old Mara, came to the zoo in December from Topeka, Kansas. The father is 3-year-old named Adhama. He arrived from the San Diego Zoo last year.

Hippos must be real... hip. The Los Angeles Zoo received a hippopotamus baby, and the first one in twenty-six years! The baby hippo was born on Halloween 2014. The veterinarians have yet to determine the gender of the hippo baby. The mother is from Topeka, Kansas, and the father is from the San Diego Zoo. I hope the hippo is doing well!

hippos are great swimmers and they fight a lot in the wild that's one thing i don't enjoy but it's part of life and we just have to except that I'm trying to say is i like i think hippos that are born in the zoo are more calm and relaxed because the no the people and wont freak out because they grew up at the zoo there not going to be afraid of people if the grew up there whole life at the zoo

I think that it is very interesting to have a new hippo to be born in 26 years, it is a miracle for such an amazing animal. I know this is a little off topic but i don't think that the mamma and papa hippo should have such a big age difference.

I wonder if they will ever find out if the baby hippo is a male or a female?
