SpongeBob gets musical thanks to big name musicians
There is a "SpongeBob" musical in the works. But this music is no kiddie stuff.
Nickelodeon said it will produce the world opening. It will be called "The SpongeBob Musical." It will be performed in Chicago. It is coming next summer. The musical will include original songs. They will be written by many artists. They include John Legend and David Bowie.
They will include Cyndi Lauper and Plain White T's. They Might Be Giants and Lady Antebellum will be included too.
Panic! At the Disco will also take part. And Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. Plus more musicians will be included.
It is co-imagined by Tina Landau. She will also direct. A book was written by Kyle Jarrow. Music supervision is by Tom Kitt.
The show will play Chicago's Oriental Theatre. It will start June 7. It may be taken to New York's Broadway from there.
Producers call it "a rousing tale of a simple sea sponge who faces the unthinkable. It is a celebration of unchecked hope. Of unexpected heroes. And of pure theatrical invention."
Kids' material has made the leap to stage before. They have included "The Addams Family." ''Annie" has also made the leap to stage. And so has "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown."
Writer, director and producer Adam McKay is also working on an "Archie" musical.
