Scientists say reindeer may be shrinking due to warming

Reindeer living on the Arctic island of Svalbard are getting smaller. Researchers say climate change may be the cause.

Scientists from Britain and Norway have studied the animals. They have found that adult Svalbard reindeer born in 2010 weigh 12 percent less on average than those born in 1994.

Ecologist Steve Albon is from Scotland's James Hutton Institute. He says rising temperatures in the Arctic mean Svalbard is getting more rain. The rain creates a hard ice sheet. The island's reindeer can't easily break through it. So it is more difficult for them to reach food.

Reindeer populations are also increasing. This is due to warmer summers. More reindeer means more competition among them.

Albon says researchers think there is a correlation between rising temperatures and reindeer weight. He says more research is needed to confirm the link.

Their findings were presented Dec. 12. They were announced at a meeting of the British Ecological Society.

Warmer weather is effecting reindeer in Svalbard. This is because ice sheets make it harder to get food. The reindeer can't break the sheets easily."The rain creates a hard ice sheets. The islands reindeer can't easily break through it.So it is more difficult for them to reach food."The rain on this island effects the reindeer. This is how warmer weather is effecting reindeer.

Warmer weather on the Arctic island of Svalbard is causing reindeer to get smaller. Warm weather means more rain that creates a hard ice sheet. It makes it hard for the reindeer to get food. Also, due to warmer summers reindeer populations are increasing. This means competition among them for food, water, and shelter. This is how increasing temperature is causing reindeer getting smaller.

The snow will melt and food will be further away than usual. Since the weather is warmer, more reindeers are born. They will have to fight each other for food.
