Sudarsan Pattnaik made history Feb. 10. He is a well-known sand artist. Pattnaik and a team of 45 students built the world's largest sandcastle. They built it on Puri Beach. That is in India's eastern state of Odisha.
According to Debabrata Mohapatra at The Times of India, Pattnaik's 48.8-foot sandy mega-structure was tall enough to officially earn a Guinness Book of World Records title. It is the world's tallest sandcastle.
It took Pattnaik and his crew nine days to complete their sculpture. It's a sprawling castle. The words "World Peace" are written in front. The sculpture includes a peace dove as well as medallions showing the faces of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.
The previous Guinness world-record was a 45.83-foot castle. It was constructed on Florida's Virginia Key Beach by professional sand sculptor Ted Siebert and 19 helpers. They built it in October 2015. They worked over two weeks.
"Sudarsan broke the previous record by building a 14.84-meter-high castle in the backdrop of the Bay of Bengal in Puri," state tourism director Nitin Bhanudas Jawale told Mohapatra. "We will exhibit the art on the beach for two more days to attract tourists."
The 39-year-old Pattnaik is a professional sand sculptor. In 1994, he founded the Sudarsan Sand Art Institute. It is in Puri. He teaches others the craft he has practiced since he was a child. According to his website, he more or less grew up on the beach. He taught himself how to sculpt in sand. He says it was an ability gifted from God.
Over the years, he's competed in many international sand sculpting competitions. He has created sculptures to raise cancer awareness, AIDS awareness, celebrate world peace. He even created a replica of the Taj Mahal out of black sand. It was to celebrate the building's 350th anniversary.
Pattnaik isn't a stranger to setting records. He told Mohaptra that he has set 23 sand sculpting records in the Limca Book of Records. It is an India-only version of Guinness. But setting a world record is special.
"This achievement will encourage me to touch new milestones," he told Press Trust India.
Mohaptra reports that Pattnaik and his crew worked 12 hours a day the last four days to complete the sculpture. They were supervised the entire time by a crew of officials from Guinness.
"They took nearly one hour to verify my art and measure the height before making the official announcement," Pattnaik said.
Pattnaik's structure is the world's tallest sandcastle. But it is nowhere close to the world's tallest sand sculpture. That is an epic 73-foot, 7-inch tall creation. It has been certified by Guinness. It's called, "Why Is the Hummingbird King of All Animals."  The sculpture was built during the Zhoushan International Sand Sculpture Festival in China. That was in 2010.

The main idea is about Sudarsan pattnaik's built THE largest sand castle.

It took a hour because it is very tall and it take longer to measure taller things than small things. In the article said that the sand castle is about 48.8 foot long. in the story

I think anyone can send awareness to the world, but what he has done to earn almost 25 awards that raise awareness, is special. To make on a beach out of a material that not a lot of people use, is incredible! I think it means a lot to the people with cancer, Perkins disease, (etc.) For him to be in the Guinness book of world records is amazing too! I'm glad he decided to go with piece in the world records. Thank You Patrick!
