President Barack Obama has invited President-elect Donald Trump to meet with him. They plan to discuss the handover of power from his administration to Trump's.

The White House said Obama, a Democrat, called Trump, a Republican, in the early hours of Nov. 9. Obama congratulated Trump on his win. Obama was elected president eight years ago. He has served two four-year terms. The two leaders will meet today, Thursday, Nov. 10. They will get together at the White House. Obama was to update Trump about planning for the transition.

Obama was to offer his first reaction to the election in a televised statement. The White House said Obama would focus on "what steps we can take as a country to come together."

"Ensuring a smooth transition of power is one of the top priorities the president identified at the beginning of the year. And a meeting with the president-elect is the next step," White House press secretary Josh Earnest said in a statement.

For Obama, the act of holding the meeting is a blow to his legacy. It hurts his hopes for leaving a lasting imprint on the nation's policies. Trump has vowed to overturn much of what Obama has done. They include Obama's health care law. It is commonly referred to as Obamacare. Trump also may end the Iran nuclear deal. And he could put a stop to a carefully negotiated trade deal with Asia.

Obama also called Hillary Clinton after it became clear she'd lost. The White House said Obama had "expressed admiration for the strong campaign she waged throughout the country."

It was unclear how in-depth Obama's call was with Trump. Or, how long it lasted. The White House noted that Obama placed the call from his residence. It is inside the White House. It's located in Washington.

Trump's campaign manager is Kellyanne Conway. She described the call as a "warm conversation" and a "gracious exchange." She said Trump had missed the president's original call. He was speaking to supporters in New York. Trump called him back.

Like Clinton and other Democrats, Obama didn't appear to see Trump's victory coming. He campaigned strongly for Clinton. Obama said he was confident. When Americans showed up to vote, he said, they'd choose against electing the billionaire. Trump made his fortune in real estate. He also is a former reality TV star. He has no formal government experience.

Obama had warned supporters that "the fate of the republic" rested on Clinton defeating Trump.

Many people were surprised by Trump's victory because he said that he wants to stop to a carefully negotiated trade deal with Asia. And he also wants to separate families and he doesn't want Mexicans to be in United States and he wants to send them back to their state. Also Obama didn't see that Donald Trump had won and Obama was confident that Hillary Clinton would win because she doesn't want to separate families. Trump made his own fortune in real estate.

People were supprised that trump won because many people voted for him but started doubting that he was going to win because of how close the number was between trump and clinton. Not mentioning the thought that there are imagrants in the united states that came here or a better life such as my parents, thinking that trump will kick them out and force them to go back to where they came from.

Many people were surprised that Donald Trump won because many people thought that he was being racist. So they were voting for Hillary Clinton because she said ''to end war, to be free''. But then many people showed that they were trump supporters at the last minute of voting. So they were surprised that Hillary Clinton did not win the Presidential election.

Cause people said he was a republican and Donald trump has overturn much what Obama did for us and not only that Obama even warned the supporters that the fate of republic rested on Hillary Clinton defeating Donald trump in the election and that trump had no formal government experience inside him to be presented of America and to serve us people well.

They were surprised because they said they will not vote for a billionaire. They were also surprised to see Trumps victory because Hillary Clinton looked like a good president. He said it campaigned to Hillary Clinton. And Obama said that she did a really good speech. So that's why people were surprised to see that Donald Trump won.
