A man was paralyzed by a gunshot more than 10 years ago. Now, he can shake hands, drink and play "rock, paper, scissors." How does he do it? He controls a robotic arm with his thoughts, researchers have reported.

Two years ago, doctors in California implanted a pair of tiny chips into the brain of Erik Sorto. The chips decoded his thoughts to move the free-standing robotic arm. The 34-year-old has been working with researchers and occupational therapists. Together they practice and fine-tune his movements.

It's the latest attempt at creating mind-controlled prosthetics. These can help disabled people gain more independence. In the last decade, several people have been outfitted with brain implants. They enable their minds to control a computer cursor or steer prosthetic limbs.

Here are some things to know about the new work. It was published by the journal Science.

Doctors at the University of Southern California implanted small chips into Sorto's brain. It was during a five-hour surgery in 2013. The sensors recorded the electrical activity of about 100 brain cells as Sorto imagined reaching and grasping.

Researchers asked Sorto to think about what he wanted to do. That was instead of breaking down the steps of the movements. The research was according to principal investigator Richard Andersen. He teaches at the California Institute of Technology.

After weeks of imagining movements, Sorto trained with Caltech scientists and therapists. This was at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. They worked to get the robotic arm to move. The movements started with a handshake. Then they graduated to more complicated tasks. The sensors relayed their signals to the arm. Thus, they bypassed Sorto's damaged spinal cord.

Scientists have long strived to make robotic arms produce movements that are as natural as possible. Previous research targeted a region of the brain known as the motor cortex. It controls movement.

The latest work has zeroed in on a different area of the brain. It is the posterior parietal cortex. That part of the brain is involved in the planning of movements. The hope is that this strategy will lead to smoother motions.

It's unclear whether the new approach is better. No side-by-side comparisons have been made yet. But it gives researchers a potential new target in the brain.

In 2012, a Massachusetts woman paralyzed for 15 years directed a robotic arm to pick up a bottle of coffee. Then she brought it to her lips. In another instance, a quadriplegic man in Pennsylvania used a robotic arm to give a high-five. He could also make the arm stroke his girlfriend's hand.

Erik Sorto has a caregiver at home. He goes to the rehab center several times a week. He practices using the robotic arm.

Since suffering a gunshot wound 13 years ago, he longed to have a drink without help. The first time he tried with the prosthetic arm he was so excited. This made him lose his concentration. That caused the arm to spill the drink. On the second try, he directed the arm to pick up the bottle and bring it to his mouth. Then he sipped through a straw.

It tasted "like a little piece of heaven," Sorto said.

There has been progress in the last decade. However, many hurdles remain. Researchers still are working on ways to get brain-controlled prosthetics to help paralyzed people in their daily lives. Experts said computer programs must run faster to interpret brain signals. And the brain implants must be more durable.

Currently, wire connections run from a patient's brain to outside the skull. That increases the risk of infections. Future systems need to be wireless. They also need to be contained within the body like pacemakers. That is according to experts J. Andrew Pruszynski of Western University in Canada and Jorn Diedrichsen of University College London. They wrote about it in an accompanying editorial in Science.

    I think it is awesome for paralyzed patients to have a mind-controlled robot arm. I wish I had one too.

    Well the paralyzed man should be very happy that he could do stuff that he couldn't do before but I wonder does his head hurts because the people implanted the chips inside his brain so I think it should have hurt like crazy because when I see movies they scream there head off when somethings like these happens to them so yeah it should hurt. But I don't know if implanting the chips was the best idea because the chip might have a virus and might mess up the brain.

    this was a fun article even though I didn't understand a thing I am for sure I won't be a scientist when I grow up and if so I need to change soon though the critical thinking makes sense

    Summary: This topic is about a man that was paralyzed by a gunshot and the doctors put into his brain a pair of tiny chips and with it he could move the robotic arm because the chips decode his thoughts and this make his life easier and also it talk about the importance of the brain implants to control a computer to make a better way to survive.
    Personal thinking : I think this is so good because it gives to people another possibility to have a kind of normal life again, of course it doesn't will be the same life but I think it helps too much.
    Critical thinking challenge : Because he lost the possibility to move his own arms and that's the reason why the doctors put the chips into his brain to move the robotic arm.

    Critical thinking challenge (answer): Because this device must be used with the brain as it responds to the thoughts of the person using it and because it is the brain that handles the extremities of the body and non-disabled people to handle a prosthesis should be implemented in the same way.

    Opinion: It is a highly relevant as there are many disabled people who need new methods to redo their daily lives, is a technological breakthrough that eventually should be able to massively and help many people to achieve goals, objectives and dreams so far not been able to do, sometimes they are as simple as drinking a glass of water or shaking hands with an important person for them, but for a person disabled this means to feel things that previously could not feel.

    Summary: the text "Man controls robotic arm with his mind" speaks of prosthetic brain chips that were implanted into a disabled man, prostheses that after several attempts and adjustments managed to help this man could move one of its ends with the thought virtually simulating the movement of a real limb handled by the brain.
    This brain chip helps people with different disabilities such as the lack of an arm or leg.
