Ready to Talk Plot?
Ready to Talk Plot?
Hello!
My kids are writing reviews and posting them on my TweenTribune page. I created a program in our area called "For Teens~By Teens" Recommended Read program. Our local Barnes and Noble support us by donating 4 books a month for 4 tween readers [How cool!]. I created the requirements and format for the reviews after talking with several YA publishers. I will attach the PDF file for your consideration; you are welcome to use it if it works for you and your students!
I would love for any student/teacher/author to read my student reviews and offer feedback/comments, and book recommendations. Talking plot is one of our favorite things to do... so I hope I find some interested readers to participate!
My school is in Vista, CA. My Tween page is called "Mrs. Duncan- "For Teens~By Teens" Book Reviews [6-12th grade].
Question: How do I get my students' book reviews to be visable in the Topics/Book reviews? I would love for them to be published on the main site and not just on my page!

I went to Barnes and Noble and the local paper myself. The CRM [Community Relations Manager] at B&N handles all of the YR/YA releases... and any book fair teachers want to have. I designed the program so tweens and teens would be able to read and recommend books to one another...since very few of the employees have actually read the YA releases. I also contact authors and set up school visits and book signings. They're so excited to work with my students... and it really motivates my kids. My suggestion to you is to go to your local B&N and ask them if you can participate in the FTBT review program. It's great publicity for them- and it looks good to have the schools and community working together. Also- contact your local paper and see if they are willing to publish 1 review a week... and the same review could be displayed in the store along with the book.
It does take a little work, but I have found it to be extremely worthwhile. I seek out my older students in high school to review the YA books with possible content... and my tweens review the YR/YA books that I have approved. It's a win~win situation!!
Good luck, and if you need anything... just ask! Beth Duncan
So how did you convince Barnes and Noble to do this? I see you have the student reviews posted in their store, as well as, in your locak newspaper. Did you go to the paper or did they come to you? I love this idea! I've been trying to form a book club at school and it hasn't taken off, but this sounds like a great way to get it going.
