Yum? School lunches get more veggies

Yum? School lunches get more veggies The first major nutritional overhaul of school meals in more than 15 years means most offerings — including the always popular pizza — will come with less sodium, more whole grains and a wider selection of fruits and vegetables on the side.

"As parents, we try to prepare decent meals, limit how much junk food our kids eat, and ensure they have a reasonably balanced diet," said First Lady Michelle Obama. "And when we're putting in all that effort the last thing we want is for our hard work to be undone each day in the school cafeteria."

Under the new rules, pizza won't disappear from lunch lines, but will be made with healthier ingredients. Entire meals will have calorie caps for the first time and most trans fats will be banned. Sodium will gradually decrease over a 10 year period. Milk will have to be low in fat and flavored milks will have to be nonfat.

While many schools are improving meals already, others still serve children meals high in fat, salt and calories. The guidelines are designed to combat childhood obesity and are based on 2009 recommendations by the Institute of Medicine, the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences.

i think that we should have veggies but really we still want some food that doesnt have veggies, we want our pizza the way it is now. i think that if you turn everything in to veggies that less people will eat lunch food

Ridiculous. There is no other word that can properly describe this nutrition overhaul. The more you change the meals, the more the children are going to resent them. Just placing them on the plates, is not going to make the children eat them. Instead, the children are not going to be eating enough food. Giving them less healthy food that they will stock up on is better than giving them healthy foods that they will not eat.

This is a great idea. I'm not a health nut, but it is ridiculous how unhealthy our school lunches are. I have to bring my own food because I refuse to eat that instant-heart-attack food. It's disgusting.

Serving better and healthier school lunches will definitely help out in fighting obesity. Moreover parents wouldn't have to worry as much about what their children eat when they are not around. Healthier school lunches would also help prevent bad health issues later on in life that many times occur because of the bad choices one makes at young ages.

thats true but still we need healthy food to but they are gunna banbed ischool lunches for ALL healthy food not good. we should have pizza and everything it good to have salad and other veggies but we need other foods too.....

I think having more veggies in school lunch is great. They should start adding more healthy food to lunch. Some people think that school lunch should stay the same but I disagree.

I think that serving vegetables is a good thing that they're doing. Serving more whole grains and fruits and vegetables more than junk food is great. I know because I got sick of that.

I do not like vegetables at all really. If our school gave us pizza with healthy ingredients i would never eat it. I cant stand school food any way but that makes it worse.

Summary
Schools are starting to get veggies. There also getting rid of the amount of sodium and more grains in the food. This would help out a lot because a lot of American kids are fat.
