You can't walk and chew gum in Singapore
Singapore said it will maintain a ban on chewing gum sales, a policy that has helped shape the city-state's international image as a tightly controlled, squeaky-clean island.
The ban, first imposed in 1992, is necessary to reduce gum-related litter and vandalism, Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman, parliamentary secretary of the national development ministry, told lawmakers Thursday.
"We remain concerned that lifting the ban could result in chewing gum litter resurfacing as a problem," Mohamad said. "The government stands by its decision to ban chewing gum as the rationale is based on maintaining a clean and comfortable living environment."
A clean city is more important than the freedom to chew gum, Mohamad said, adding that before the ban gobs of gum had stopped subway doors from closing, creating delays.

I think that they should be able to chew gum, but they should throw it a way when they are done . That way the government would not have to ban it . Another idea would be to leave trash cans on every 3 blocks so that they could throw gum away.
Banning gum is rediculous!!! I understand that they are trying to keep the environment safe, but banning such a small thing is not going to make a very big difference. Although I do find gum under desks and on walls to be gross, I think people should still be able to have it. This is just my thoughts though.
I could see why Singapore wouldn't want people chewing gum if it became a huge issue. At the same time, I would be pretty upset if I wasn't allowed to chew gum in public. People chew gum for all kinds of reasons and just taking it away from them like that is really unfair, especially to the people who didn't litter the streets with their gum.
OK that is the weirdest thing ever "a clean city is better than the freedom of chewing gum"that is the worst thing they could do plus like in social studies they taught us that people should have their rights and if they are going to have any rights they should at least be able to chew gum when they walk
Not being able to chew gum, that is ridiculous . Not being able to chew gum won't help their international image . But I do have to addmit it's really gross that people will stick their gum under seats and tables , throw gum on the ground and stick their gum on walls. But just because of people littering with gum that is no reason to ban it.
No more gum while walking?? That's just messed up!! Everyone should be allowed to chew gum everywhere they go while walking. That's just my opinion
No more gum, how sad. At least it is cleaner there. If I were them when I went on vacation I would buy a truckload of gum and chew it.
They policy is good.I think peoples will be healthy. But,if i am on singapore i will be chew becuse i like to chew gum when i ate.
You can't chew gum in Singapore. The law was created in 1992. The goverment doesn't want gum littered everywhere. I kind of like the law because when I see gum under chairs or on the streets it really disturbs me. I also don't like it because I like to chew gum.
Singapore has decided to maintain their ban on chewing gum. I have mixed opinions on this. I understand that they are trying to keep their country clean by banning gum. They feel as though it will decrease the amount of pollution and vandalism. However, banning something as small as chewing gum is ridiculous in a way. If they ban chewing gum now, it is only a matter of time until they ban other things too. These things could be a lot more serious than chewing gum and could take away more of their rights.
