Write an essay. Win $100. The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts is hoping an iconic Depression-era picture by Dorothea Lange will help inspire people to write.

The museum is hosting the "Inspired by Art" contest. Children and adults are being asked to submit essays of up to 200 words that are inspired by Lange's photograph "Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California."

The photo is part of the museum's "Light Works: Photographs from the Collection" exhibit, which runs through Dec. 12.

The deadline for the contest is Oct. 29. Entries are being accepted in three categories: Adult, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. Details and full entry instructions are on the museum's website.

The top prize in each category is $100.

This is an easy opportunity for someone to win one hundred bucks. I like that it is cross-sectional--allows different age groups to participate. I hope the younger kids use this to show they can be just as creative as adults.

I think it would be nice if we could win $100 just for writing a essay. I would write this essay, and try my best just for this picture. I am very creative, and as I am looking at the photo i have alot of thoughts.

I think it would be pretty cool to win $100 just for writing an essay. I would enter that contest if I could. There is so much you could say inspired by this work of art. The problem would be saying it all in 200 words or less. I bet there were some really good essays.

That is cool. It is kind of weird because it is a depression-era picture, but you could probably find a lot of words inspired by it.

last year a girl in ,my class wrote an essay and sent it to crane and she was sopose to get a letter saying if she won or not but she never got one.:/

Why wouldn't you write an essay when there is the possibility of winning $100? I mean, WOW that's such a great opportunity for students to make money.

i think writing the essay would be great because an essay is easy too write and win $100 dollars when you write the essay so its pretty cool.

That's good that they're getting people to interact and do something that has a connection with art! Writing an essay about a certain thing reminds me of when I wrote a speech for my Oratorical Club at school. I won $100, which is the prize for this essay contest in the story, I believe.

I wish I could have enter but that time is to late. Winning $100 would be very nice, in many ways. An Artist myself would love that money....

I would've loved writing an essay for this piece of art! I am a creative writer and i enjoy writing essays and stories. Sounds like fun.
